Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

[The meaning of the word "Drachen" is not clear - literally kite or dragon, perhaps meaning decoy]

[The word "not" is underlined in pencil with a question mark (see original).  Presumably "not" is a typo.]

2)  I believe that the circular saw-like tone is a new acoustic locating and towed U-boat Drachen (Radio Message Serial No. . . .) because:  a)  Runs while the destroyer proceeds at very low speed.  b)  Tone can suddenly be switched on or off, while the destroyer continues to run.  c)  Sound is always constant shrill and even when overrun, one does not have the impression that the destroyer tows a Drachen.

00.40 BF 5721 Caught by searchlight aircraft from 355°R, 75°T, at the same moment machine gun fire at the bridge.  4-engined aircraft in low altitude flight, range 1500 meters, altitude 25 meters.  Went to AK and turned hard to starboard.  two bombs distance 2-3 meters to starboard forward of the torpedo hatch, third bomb distance 3-4 meters at the level of the E-motors.  3 heavy concussions. By the water column and air pressure all gun crews were thrown to the deck.  Short detection first heard at overflight.  After clear report by Chief Engineer, Crash dive.  At depth A -20 meters boat caught and balanced.
Damage:  Diving planes, port main switchboard, illumination, transmitter, starboard shaft knocks, fixed periscope adjustable mirror broken.  2 battery cells leaked.  Suction system for both batteries torn.  Three T 3 in tubes I, II and III out of service.  All batteries [in the torpedoes] ruined.  Motor chamber bulkheads dented.  In tube III battery switch, main switch rudder lock and stop mechanism completely smashed.  After removing the pistols, the torpedoes were ejected because the batteries were giving off gas.  Torpedo shot angle receiver linkage warped.
Behavior of the crew was calm and good.  Due to surprise approach from ahead and a short distance the manned weapons were not able to shoot.

      1)  A fixed Naxos-Fu.M.B. antenna should be sought for the Fliege because:
              a)  Fliege end cable is too susceptible to failure and brittle and the Fliege is very vulnerable when getting into the boat.
              b)  The interception of brief detections is not guaranteed by rotation with the direction finder and this is a very great concern.
      2)  The detected faults in the Fu.M.B. could not be corrected due to lack of spare parts.
      3)  A dedicated Fu.M.B. would have increased the tactical readiness of the boat.
      4)  Accurate knowledge and careful maintenance is required to keep the 3.7 cm cannon operational at the front as a fully automatic weapon.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

                   on the K.T.B. of "U-548" (Zimmermann) from 21.3. - 24.6.1944.

First patrol of the Kommandant, operation in the area of the Newfoundland Bank and south therefrom.
Despite the correct and energetic operation of the Kommandant no greater success then a destroyer sunk was granted the boat with the relatively heavy traffic encountered - this was mainly due to the continual fog in the operations area.  Despite numerous sound bearings one could not get at the enemy due to the poor visibility.
The Kommandant was particularly unlucky on 9 May during the meeting with the enemy convoy.  As a result, the visibility of 50 meters and due to the lack of suitable torpedoes an attack was impossible.
Behavior of the boat both in attack against naval targets as in the defense of aircraft is worthy of recognition

  Accredited success:  1 destroyer sunk.
