Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

Due to the continual sightings, I believe that I am in an enemy air reconnaissance line.  Therefore for now I will run off on course 90°, for 3 reasons:
      1)  To present the small side in case of detections to port (all sightings of enemy aircraft came from the port side).
      2)  In such a strong Sea State a boat driving athwart the seas can hardly be recognized from the air.
      3)  Better lookout possibilities than against the seas.
These considerations were significantly influenced by the fact that, because of low [battery] capacity and low air supply no diving could have been carried out.

Strikingly strong, nearly gapless air surveillance nearly exclusively by Sunderlands in square AF 52, 54, 55, 57.  Aircraft fly between 100-400 meters, no detection determined on sighted aircraft.

No reception was possible during the very long wavelength Program times at 00.00, 04.00, and 08.00 hours due to strong interference, also the boat cannot be held at very long wavelength receiving depth due to the heavy Swell.  After surfacing at first incoming Radio Messages could not be decoded.  After immediate checking and examination incoming Radio Messages at 13.13 hours the Radio Message from 24 May Serial No. 678 was decoded in which the exchange table was changed.  With the new exchange table all the backed up Radio Messages were decoded.  Due to incorrect order of decoding Radio Messages the following Radio Message was first received at:

This was the first message concerning Nordheimer which reached me.  Because my position is 125 nm from the accident location, I am already just off the objective point and from further Radio Messages it seems that Vorpostenbooten have already arrived at the accident location, I decide not to come about initially, instead to send off Radio Message 1753/25.

I calculated speed and time so as to reach "V 1" 24 hours after sending the first report (ßß of 25 May Serial No. 32).  This Short Signal was sent incorrectly twice due to an encoding error and corrected with Radio Message of 25 May Serial No. 608.  But I thought the time group of the SS signal as authoritative. Give therefore on FT of FdU 0009/613/52 of 26 May.

20.08   At periscope depth, carrier aircraft observed bearing 265°T, far off.  Diesel sounds with changing volume 1-4.  I turn toward the sound bearing.  Diesel sounds shift in northerly and southerly direction.

It could be destroyer sounds, I do not believe that because destroyers with diesels are rare.  I believe that it is more likely an own U-boat or another vessel.

20.44   Carrier aircraft observed at periscope depth bearing 265°T, with NW-course.

It is impossible that sounds originate from an own U-boat because aircraft are easily distinguished (biplane, low flying).
