Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

[position in error - U-995 reported this attack in AB 8673 which agrees with positions at 20.00 hours before and 04.00 hours after]

Aircraft astern in approach, range 4000-5000 meters, type Sunderland.
The flying boat flies within the lower cloud layer without locating.
Aircraft!  Well-placed fire of the anti-aircraft weapons observed, one 3.7 cm hit on the aft fuselage, stern turret and stabilizer, a second hit forward.  The 2 cm hits on the hull of the Sunderland can be seen clearly.  300-400 meters behind the stern the flying boat turned hard to starboard.  Heavy gunfire from the cockpit and, above all, from a rear turret.

                 Final Considerations.
The behavior of the crew was good.  Damage and failures caused by bombs were repaired quickly and safely.  The bridge watch deserves special recognition, thanks to whose attention it was possible that the boat saw all aircraft in time despite often unfavorable weather, as almost all aircraft flew in without any detection being established.  Once locating is established, the range of the Fliege allows for timely diving.
What is perhaps valuable in terms of navigational experience is that almost without exception I had a navigation offset to the northwest up to 12 nm per day. (Navigation only based on the sun due to constant lightness).

I solved the difficulty of cleaning the 3.7 cm gun with the following measure, which worked well on the voyage:  I had a piece welded out of the forward limiting bracket and inserted a removable intermediate piece there so that the barrel could be easily pulled through from the upper winter garden, which otherwise causes difficulties in calm weather and is no longer possible in rough seas.

on the K.T.B. "U-995" from 24.5. - 29.7.1944

1)         A well executed operation without success possibilities with strong enemy air.
2)         Boat was always able to avoid strong air surveillance by diving in good time, except for one attack by Sunderland on July 21st, which was flawlessly repelled by good anti-aircraft fire.
3.)         To 21 July 00.19:  Diving was still too early as protective depth could not be reached before the bombs fell.  Further fending off with the 3.7 cm gun was certainly possible.
4)         I agree with the Final Considerations. The suggestion seems good.
