Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

12.12   Light detonation in the vicinity.  After all around sweep determined a smoke bomb 200-meters in the wake.  Aircraft single engine, over the boat.  Convoy zigzagged away to the southeast, 2 escort vessels come towards the boat.  Attack opportunity gone to hell.  Was seen by the aircraft because sometimes went very shallow and showed the periscope generously.  Probably the diving location was betrayed by the oil trace.  Prepared for depth charge pursuit and went to depth A -30 meters.  Listening and locating conditions must be very bad because the approaching escort vessels were first heard with they were directly over the boat.
A half hour after detonation of the smoke bomb propeller sounds of 2 escort vessels in the vicinity.  One over us, the other further away.
12.28   The gyro-compass was stopped, steered by magnetic compass.  Incomprehensibly no depth charges.  Convoy possibly French, otherwise completely unexplained.  The type of patrol vessel was poorly identified.  Small black smokestack cap was noted.  After an hour went to periscope depth, nothing more seen of the convoy.  One escort vessel lay stopped at the diving location, came towards us.  Before going deep ejected a Bolde, and this seemed to hold the escort vessel.  However not a single depth charge fell.
Proceeded submerged at depth A -40 meters.
    16.00 EV 7538 Course 220°, proceeded submerged.
16.14   Surfaced.  Course 220°, HF.  The convoy was either English, in which case it already entered Takoradi, of French, then pursuit is senseless.  Therefore no pursuit.

    13.35   Radio Message 1330/30
Convoy dispersed.  One part SW, one part SE.  Am following SW group.  ET 9683.    Merten.
Convoy dispersed.  Gun boat turned away hard on opposite course.  Steamers scattered immediately at higher speed in a sector from 180°.  Initially it gave the impression as if one group goes to the SW, the other separately to the SE.  Intend to remain with the SW group.  Immediately sent a Radio Message to Löwe.  Steamers scatter so strongly that I must concentrate on one.  A large steamer with 3 masts, closest to me is my prey.  At first the steamer steers a SW course.
    16.00 ET 9961
15.30   Steamer is lost from sight in a rain squall.
16.25   Steamer in sight again.  Steamer makes large legs around the general course.  Now steers general course SE.
20.00 FE 3333 The maneuver ahead is extraordinarily difficult because of the irregular large legs around the general course and high speed (13 knots).  A sure maneuver ahead is nearly impossible.  Each time when the boat it fortuitously ahead  of the enemy on the general course, the general course changed. If he wants to zigzag like that up to Cape Town, it will take 2 months.  Intention:  give up a day submerged attack, plan a night surface attack.  Closing in the evening twilight is very difficult and was immediately replaced by a bright moonlit night.  Finally succeed in getting 5000 meters ahead on the enemy course to dive for a night submerged attack.
22.43   Two-fan from tubes V and VI.  2 Etos, depth 3 meters, range - 3000 meters, 2 hits, running time: 2 minutes 14 seconds.  Steamer sank immediately up to the forecastle in the water.
22.45   Surfaced.  Steamer transmitted.  Interfered. Steamer is heavily armed:  3 - 12 cm, 4 4 cm anti-aircraft guns, searchlights, artillery control platform.  Steamer lies with the foreship in the water up to the bridge, stern is broken off at the after edge of the cargo hold and lies horizontally.  Steamer fires rockets and illuminates with the searchlight in the sky.  Gives no indication of sinking, therefore
23.16 hours coup de grâce with the last Ato.

30.03.42   Depth 4 meters, range - 1000 meters, running time 48.8 seconds.  Steamer sank immediately over the forestem.  Stern rises vertically out of the water.  The sinking vortex made the boats still alongside capsize.  Ship made a very big impression, estimated 7000 GRT.  Went to a boat, determined:  steamer "MUNCASTER CASTLE" 5853 GRT, armament 3 12 cm cannons, 4 4 cm anti-aircraft guns, service:  War Navy.  Over 190 men on board.  Cargo trucks, probably with Transport Command underway for Capetown.  Therefor the many boats (10-12 full lifeboats).
    23.33   Began return transit.
Serious overestimate.  Everyone had allowed the steamer 7000 GRT.  However it is not enough to get to 40000 GRT.  Once again is it 39500 GRT.
