Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

At 2 x GF the exhaust manifolds glow.  GF only pays a little, so that I must turn to the approach with enemy's target angle already at 100 to arrive at the shooting position before dawn, particularly as I am positioned on the bright horizon
Tanker lies quite high, seems to go in ballast.
11.15   Approach turn with enemy target angle 90, running at 2 x GF.   Fire control fails.
11.25   Single shots from tubes I and III. Depth 2 meters, aim point forward of the after mast, enemy target angle left 100°, speed 13 knots, fixed gyro angle 0°, fixed bearing [lead angle] 24°.
Large range estimated at 2000 meters.  Tanker just fits freely in the target optics.
Torpedo tube III was a "dead man".  Tube I hit 10 meters aft after 3 minutes 07 seconds running time - 3600 meters. (Etos).  Also he is substantially larger than was believed.  Consider 10000 GRT.
High detonation column at the point of the after bridge.  No fire.  Probably in ballast.
Ship turns off at slow speed to starboard, turn immediately for a coup de grace.
Tube II and IV (Etos).   Fired at target angle right 60°, speed 3 knots, depth 3 meters.
Torpedo tube IV was a surface runner and probably noticed.  Tanker turns bow on, so that Tube II missed, holds course continues to run at low speed.
The opportunity seems favorable, dived for submerged stern approach.  Boat initially sinks due to the unpredictable water density off shore.  After approximately 10 minutes when it is again at periscope depth, the tanker shows his stern.  Steers course 35 for the SW-pass.  Let him go because we are within sight of land, advanced twilight and defence must be expected - after the hit the tanker signalled with floodlight to the shore, I am no longer gaining at 2 times HF submerged.
Tanker has sunk a little bit deeper astern, boats are swung out in davits, however, he does not seem to think of sinking.  I have a beautiful rage!
13.56 BA 9296 Boat put on the bottom depth A +14 meters.
14.30   Propeller sounds bearing 305°T, fast running, small vessel.  High pitched tone
14.50 -   Bearing shifts ahead, becomes quieter and disappears.
    15.25
15.39   Distant, very strong, full detonations in the direction of the tanker on the port side, from which the boat rocks lightly.  Either this was an internal explosion, or it has been hit by another boat.  It was certainly not depth charge of aircraft bombs.

06.47   San Blas light house bearing 10°T.
07.25 DB 4978 2 shadows bearing 80°T.  One is very vague and comes up quickly.  Contours can't be made out.  Emerging gradually from the moon sector; the front shadow is already almost abeam.  Cannot figure him out as yet.  One sees only 2 small shadows and suspects that there is something among them.  Then suddenly a bow wave can be distinguished and barely from the horizon, a light gray painted ship's hull vaguely distinguished.
However, unfortunately, the target angle is already a blunt, distance approximately 3000 meters.  Ran for a while alongside, hardly gained even with high speed.  The fellow runs at considerable speed.  Enemy's course 330°.  Held on to the second shadow which after plotting steers 290°.  Passes out of sight after turning before a wall of haze bearing 145°T.  Steered a collision course.

09.18   Shadows from both smoke feathers bearing 155.5°T.  Both make a solid impression, steer after plotting 160°, 8 knots.  May be a pair.  Approach closer; ahead is evidently a freighter, the second one seems to be a tanker.  It is strange that their distance from each other does not change.  Gradually come abeam, closed.  Both now enter the moon sector.
10.48   And there it happens:  They shrink more and more; the front one is a wildly smoking minature tug towing a small craft of approx. 50-meter length. Appropriate enemy speed about 2-3 knots.  I let them go, because for a torpedo the case is hopeless, and I do not want to disturb the apparently favorable area for me with artillery

06.58   Singing sound bearing 335°R, becomes slowly clearer, shifting ahead.  The other boat has also dived.  Might actually be a German by the alertness. (Perhaps K.Kpt. Henne which, because of transmitter failure indicated above, could not announce itself ?).  Change of course carried out, bearings shift perfectly.  To avoid ramming turned to port, sound put astern to starboard.
07.36   Second fast propeller sound in 50°R, broad maximum, must be very close; however, nothing can be seen, U-boat now bears 117°R with the same loudness.
07.45   The 2nd sound grows louder and shifts astern.  Cat and mouse games have no purpose.

Aim point uncertain, because no single vessel could be distinguished.
Had to shoot from a long range because of very strong marine phosphorescence and because I am positioned on the moonlit side.  I could not improve my position any further because of lack of time before twilight.  The distance was substantially underestimated because of very misty horizon and the marine phosphorescence which shows the bow waves almost with the naked eye, and because no single shadow was distinguished.
The steamers zig zag to port on a southerly course, "undetermined hit" after 4 min 41 seconds on the center ship which turned out later to be a tanker.  High detonation column aft, the exact location can not be determined since just afterwards, a fourth steamer which was to the side of the torpedoed steamer, separated from him, so that it looked like he broke in two.  The hit tanker first turned in a circle then seems to be stopped.  No fire, seems to be in ballast or to have a cargo of heavy oil.  The other 3 ships run off to the west.

Nothing happens.  This miss is inexplicable to me, because range by estimate and length-method was less than 1000 meters.  (Tanker only fit from the bow to the stack in the field of view at 6 x magnification and took up about 9° at small magnification) speed was determined by the bow and stern wave as 11 knots corresponding with elapsed time, the transmigration (target angle 50-60°) adjusted to 11.5 knots.  Target angle was exact at the shot to within 1°.
Tanker did not change course or speed before or after the shot. The only possibility appears to me that in spite of everything the enemy ran 2 knots less [than estimated], so that the forward (Eto) passed ahead and the second passed under forward, because the tanker was in ballast and was quite high forward.
At a depth setting of 3 meters plus 1 meter of error in the running depth this case would be possible. Tanker had in front and astern a cannon and in the rear an extension, possibly a depth charge chute.

Because after some time the tanker does not sink further, I decide on a coup de grace.
Meanwhile, tanker lies at 200°.  Go to his port side for artillery bombardment, because it is safer there for artillery bombardment.  The tanker is heavily armed.  Forecastle:  4 anti-aircraft stands, bridge:  machine guns, stern:  1-2 anti-aircraft stands, 1 cannon.
Short forecastle, massive bridge sloping to the rear, behind it 2 cargo masts, 2 slightly raked masts, a thick slightly raked stack, sloping to the rear, gray paint.
        Size estimated at 10000 GRT.
Starboard bridge yardarm a rangefinder.  (Base about 5 meters)
For and aft some people are still aboard.  On the forecastle there is Morse, aft a blue light is switched on and off.
07.46   Single shot from tube V (Eto).  Range 500 meters, target angle left 80°, speed 0, depth 4 meters, aim point forward edge of the stack.
Miss.  Explained by aim point too far astern, intending to hit the engine; tanker coasts at approximately 2-3 knots.
07.53   Single shot from tube III (Eto).  Range - 600 meters, target angle left 90°, speed 0, depth 3 meters, aim point forward edge of after mast.  (Both masts fit completely in the target optics).   A hard metallic impact after 44 seconds.  Apparently a pistol failure.  (However, this was only reported by the bow room later, so that the first impression was of an unexplained miss)

13.07.42   A motor boat, which had been on the port side at the level of the stack, disappears astern at a fast rate.
At the second finishing shot the ship barely moved, which is clearly shown by a sagging burning lifeboat alongside.  Tube VI not loaded, because the bow cap has been leaking from beginning of the patrol.  Out of  [torpedoes] forward.  Tube V is reloaded.  However, meanwhile, the tanker sinks slowly deeper. (Presumably, by hitting the hull, the torpedo has still caused a leak, as the engine room gradually fills).
He starts to burn from the inside from the after edge of the bridge.  An oil spill burns 300 meters astern, ignited by the fallen burning boat.
08.11 DA 9198 In the shine there suddenly emerges bow left 30-40°, range - 1500 meters a patrol vessel (type "Eagle"), so that I must turn immediately, to run off at 2 x HF to the southwest. Aft of the bridge the tanker already burns quite briskly, fortunately with very strong production of smoke, so that the boat is slightly illuminated.  However, the patrol vessel has apparently seen us, has listened, or was waved on by lifeboats.  Comes up the port side of the wake.  Went to 2 x GF, the diesels smoke delightfully, such that the patrol vessel can probably no longer make us out.  Suddenly he loses his large mustache [bow wave], probably to listen.
After 1-2 min turn 30° to port, then in 10° increments to 180°.   Patrol vessel remains on the old course, shifts to port and passes,
08.45   out of sight.  Continue at 2 x HF, to haul away from the fire light of the tanker which is completely engulfed, because from experience aircraft are expected.
10.07   Violent detonation at the tanker, high flashes of flame blow over the horizon, surprisingly the aircraft do not come.
