Twilight begins, am positioned 30° aft of abeam from the tankers. Considerations: In an hour it will be light, by day maneuver ahead will be extremely protracted because both diesels smoke heavily from 2 x HF. If I attack now in the twilight by turning in at GF, I can only shoot in a broad target angle and at great range. |

Began refueling. At first tried in trail with 1 hose; however overview is too bad in darkness. Boats lying next to each other 20-25 meters before the seas, both E-motors KF. Took over with 2 hoses at the same time. Worked well, especially since the hoses alternately leak or tear, so one could always pump with one hose. |

Quickly approaching propeller sounds were heard immediately. Patrol vessel with piston engine overran the boat. Went to depth 2A meters. A second patrol vessel with a piston engine approaches. Asdic and listening pursuit. Apparently the boat was not detected despite the strongly banging shaft. Patrol vessels slowly move off. |

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote |
on the K.T.B. of "U-511" from 29.11.42 - 8.3.43. |
First operation of the Kommandanten with an experienced boat. |
The Kommandant operated deliberately and correctly at the "Schneider"- and "Johannsen"-convoys. Unfortunately the attack on 11 January took place from an unfavorable position and as a result remained unsuccessful. |
On 1 March 22.25 hours there was an attack opportunity, which however, was not perceived by the Kommandant due to very poor visibility and a lack of experience. A quick and determined approach and shooting should have led to success here. |
The Kommandant experienced an experienced defense and strong air in both operations. The educational experiences and success against the independent constitute a good profit for the Kommandant on this patrol. |
Accredited success: |
1 MA 5004 GRT sunk. |
