Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

06.41   dived.  It was determined to be a convoy of 42 steamers, protected by 5 destroyers.  The convoy steers more to the south than the single steamer.  Course 100°.  Closed to 3000 meters and attempted to attack a tanker with tube I.  Shooting range is about 3000-4000 meters.  Passed!  The surfacing and shot were completely nonsense.  I should have waited on surfacing and maneuvered ahead later and if I decided to shoot, then at least a fan from target angle 60° with a range of 2800 meters.         The steamer was completely dimmed.  Boats swung out.  Immediate sharp approach.  The shooting was very difficult  due to the swell and unsuitable gun sight due to the failure of the illumination.  Effect on the target was good.  12 hits sank the ship after 52 minutes.  113 shots were fired.  The statements of the crew of the lifeboat concerning the destination harbor and cargo contradicted each other.  The Captain spoke German.  Specified types of cargo:  Canadian wheat, piece goods and "general cargo" everyone gave different information.

        a)  Enemy course 94°
        b)  Enemy speed 8.4 knots
        c)  Range at the first shot 1100 meters, target angle 75°, range at second shot 550 meters, target angle 90°, range at third shot 650 meters, target angle 77°.
The first shot was a clear torpedo failure, the 3rd probably also.  The 2nd shot cannot be explained from here, so must have been a depth steering failure.  Set depth was 5 meters.  Ship draft estimated at 7 meters.
The shot angle set was correct by eye, the depth steering was bad, at the time of the expected hit in the 2nd shot, the target had just emerged.
06.05   The wreck burned brightly on the horizon, enormous smoke clouds issued from time to time.

07.14   Because the steamer was not found again, surfaced.  The steamer was to the SW at low speed, Course back and forth.  Intend to proceed to the south on the surface and attack him from there.  While blowing the boat suddenly cut under, because main ballast tank III and V vented due to improper blowing via the diesel exhaust gas piping.  The boat dove to 10.2 meters, was brought up again by compressed air.  Gave up the steamer, set off on westerly course to investigate this accident.
09.14 BE 3828 center-right Examination ended, the starboard diesel does not maintain blowing exhaust gas pressure, the safety valves are so sensitive they lift too early, additionally during the blowing of main ballast tank III the Chief Engineer intended to re-blow main ballast tank V.  The already low blowing exhaust gas pressure could not do this work so both tanks vented via the diesel exhaust gas piping and then the boat quickly undercut forward.  Got inside quickly, conning tower hatch shut tight, re-blew III and V with compressed air, surfaced again.

08.15   Ship stopped.  Enemy lies stopped, apparently target angle 180°, quite slight starboard list.  Some boats were launched, some still not lowered.  Came to course 20°, moved off on course 20° at 2 x HF.

08.48   Surfaced.  Nothing seen of the enemy.  Continued return transit on course 20°, both diesels HF.  Enemy was armed.  A large caliber gun was easily distinguished on the stern, another apparently on the bow.  Ship was of type "[illegible word]" of 15000 GRT.  I believe the ship sank, then on surfacing distance to the shooting location = 1 shooting range + 4.2 nm moving off distance = 5.2 nm.  Visibility today amounted to about 15 nm (and with such a high ship).  I do not believe the ship could make much way.  Nevertheless, many things are possible.

Comments of the B. d. U.

1.) A magnificent patrol, on which all weapons were exploited to the last shot.

2.) The mistrust of B-Dienst positions is unjustified.  Proof of this is was brought to the Kommandanten on 21 June.  Fasilure of the approach on 17 June was due to the fact that the meeting point of the Halifax convoy was relocated, however the shift was discovered too late.

3.) The sinking of a 7000-ton steamer from a convoy on 21 June can not be considered as absolutely certain. The O.K.W. reporting must not be more relevant to the Kommandant than his own observations.

4.) A confirmation in the English news about "ARANDORA STAR" remains to be seen.
