Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

00.10 AJ 8865 I believe that I am in the vicinity of the convoy, continued to search on northerly course.
00.45   Only now because of diving and sending of own Radio Message bearing signals are given with: "Contact lost".  This was wrong, sending should have taken place immediately on request, or on orders, at least between 22.00 and 23.00 hours.  Bearing signals are sent with the exception of diving until 09.30 hours.
00.56 AJ 8838 Convoy in sight ahead, closed on the starboard side, escorts made out on several occasions.

01.55 AJ 8836 Came to attack course, attacked two large freighters in line ahead formation.
01.57   Shot from tube I does not go, fire lamp does not light, fire order does not get through.  Associated single shot:
02.00 AJ 8836 Tube 2:  depth 3 meters, bow right, target angle 60°, enemy speed 8, range = about 500 meters.
Target is a large loaded freighter.  Missed.  After 2 minutes 20 seconds (2150 meters) a definite torpedo detonation was heard in the boat, on the bridge nothing was noticed.
02.05 AJ 8836 Tube 3:  depth 3 meters, bow right, target angle 73°, enemy speed 8 knots, range = 350 meters.
Target is a large loaded freighter with 3 masts, estimated 8000 GRT, Type "CITY OF BALTIMORE" (8400 GRT).  Hit after 23 seconds (355 meters).  High explosion column.  Steamer shoots 2 red rockets, 1 high, 1 in our direction.  Hole can be seen.  Steamer quickly takes on a list to starboard.
Turned to port.  Out of the steamer line ahead a destroyer comes with sharp target angle on enemy course 700 meters away - evasion on the surface is no longer possible.

04.10 AJ 8674 Associated single shots.
Shot from tube I:  depth 3 meters, bow left, target angle 85°, enemy speed 8 knots, range 1000 meters.
Target is a large freighter about 7000 GRT with 2 masts and 2 kingposts, loaded.  Type:  "GERALDINE MARY" (7244 GRT).
After 62 seconds (960 meters) hit amidships, about 20 meter high explosion column.  Followed by a heavy detonation, probably munitions.  After the hit shootsone white rocket to starboard.  A following small steamer was not attacked.
04.11 AJ 8674 Tube III:  depth 3 meters, bow left, target angle 60°, enemy speed 8 knots, range = 900 meters.  Target is a loaded freighter about 6000 GRT.  Type not recognized.  After 55 seconds (855 meters) hit with 30 meter high explosion column, nearly amidships.  Steamer shoots red rockets to port and settles burning astern.
04.11.32 AJ 8674 Tube II:  depth 3 meters, bow left, target angle 60°, enemy speed 8 knots.  Target is a 5-6000 GRT loaded freighter about 850 meters away.

04.43 AJ 8675 Took machine gun fire from astern, from an escort with very low silhouette, that comes out from behind a steamer.  At about the same time a steamer fires at me from my starboard side with his cannon- probably 5 cm - and shoots through the diesel air intake trunk. Machine gun hits in the bridge.
04.44 AJ 8675 Because the forward destroyer turned to opposite course, dived.
04.50 and 05.07   Sound and depth charge pursuit, no damage, depth charges lie badly, numerous smaller detonations.
05.30   Two torpedo detonations are heard, there after once again sinking sounds.

        Initiated attack from port.
Associated single shots on 2 large freighters, between these drive 2 small steamers not attacked.
08.03 AJ 8656 Tube II:  depth 3 meters, bow left, target angle 70°, speed 8 knots.  Target a large loaded freighter about 6000 GRT with 2 masts and 2 kingposts, type "PORT HALIFAX" (5820 GRT).
Hit after 80 seconds (1250 meters) amidships with high explosion column.  Immediately after the hit the steamer shoots red rockets to port.
08.04 AJ 8658 Tube IV:  depth 3 meters, bow left, target angle 65°, enemy speed 8 knots.  Target is a large loaded freighter about 8000 GRT with 2 masts and 3 kingposts.  Type:  "FREDERIE LYKES" (7772 GRT).

Sound pursuit, poorly placed depth charges.  Up to 08.49 hours continuous detonations heard.  Sinking sounds from a steamer are clearly distinguished, from another not perfectly.  Bow torpedo tubes reloaded.
09.00 AJ 8658 Surfaced.  A steamer lies stopped about 3 nm off, in my vicinity a destroyer drives on changing courses and recovers survivors.  Closed both.  Recognized that the steamer torpedoed by me is down by the bow.  Because of the presence of the destroyer went to the other side for a coup de grâce.
09.30   While approaching and later while running off pass through numerous small white lights, coming from life jackets, rafts and cutters.
09.30 AJ 8658 Came to attack course for coup de grâce.
09.36   However he doesn't want to have a second torpedo. The steamer suddenly settles up to the bridge, rears up steeply, stern high out of the water and sinks. Large areas rise to the surface of the water, because of the proximity of the destroyer and the beginning of twilight I can no longer stay to see if it is cargo.
09.40 AJ 8658 Pursued the convoy.
10.00   Ran off to port for a destroyer.
10.05 AJ 8656 Convoy in sight, steering an easterly course.
The destroyer belongs to the starboard screen and zig zags around there, shortly afterward another destroyer comes from port, chasing after the convoy, astern one is still with the shipwrecked.  I see that it would have been appropriate to run to the east or southeast, instead of to the northeast, however assumed a more northerly convoy course.  I am now positioned astern (southwest) of the convoy, running off on the surface is no longer possible because of the 3 destroyers, as it is already too light.
10.15   Prepared Radio Message sent:  "Apart from reported 4 steamers, 2 further steamers 08.00 hours AJ 8658.  With numerous detonations heard sinking of one is certain, the other probable.  Each 5-6000 GRT.  Forced to submerge.  Depth charges.  3 - 2 torpedoes, still 47 cbm.  Forstner".

15.20 AJ 6681 Came to periscope depth, by sound bearings steamers must still be passing to port, the other weak sound bearing is astern.  On this bearing an escort is positioned about 800 meters off.  Canon on the stern easily distinguished, a steamer passes my port side at about 700 meters with target angle 80°, setting ordered, periscope again turned on the escort, received artillery fire, no longer have time to take the shot, Asdic sounds, went deep.  Sound pursuit, depth charges.
Failures:  both diesels initially out of service, with starboard diesel the discharge block is torn and its mounting bolt broken, with the port diesel the lubricating oil filter is heavily damaged.  Port diesel was initially made ready by exchange of the filters, want to have a diesel ready as soon as possible to be able to surface and pursue.
15.28                15.38   Steamer with piston engine passes to starboard.  10 minutes after the last steamer passes to starboard there are absolutely no sound bearings in the gear, convoy is then about 1 nm away!

15.41 - 15.55 AJ 6681 Again strong destroyer sounds.  No further sound bearings.

16.17 AJ 6681 Ran off at HF, ended silent running, commenced repairs to the diesels.

Vexing, with enemy course 45° and 7 knots convoy would have had to be located exactly where I dived around 05.50 hours, my navigation fix was from the last evening, Lohmann certainly also got a navigation fix, however, with a sound locator that does not detect a convoy at a range of one mile, one cannot expect anything more, if only I had considered only the contact keeping reports of Lohmann on the convoy.
From plotting the convoy is now located in AK 1827, this is 34 nm away of me, can no longer get there in the dark, maneuvering ahead during the day can not be accomplished with my fuel oil inventory of 13 cbm.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

                              on the Kriegstagebuch of "U-402" from  6.8 - 20.11.1942.

A good, successful and fortunate patrol.  The Kommandant finally had a chance to showcase his skills.  The success was tenaciously and resolutely fought against changeable weather conditions and multiple strong enemy defenses.
