Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

20.00 CF 3147 At periscope depth.  four-engined aircraft over me.  Evidently the close escort.
        Decision:
I am still positioned 2 nm off the plotted general course line of the convoy.  Start from now for a day attack.  Go to depth 30 meters silent speed, course 90°.  Sound bearing of the convoy is located in the sector 130-150°T and shifts a little astern, becomes steadily louder.
21.40 CF 3143 During the attempt to go to periscope depth, I am over run from starboard astern to port ahead.  4 depth charges  Boat is at 25 meters.  Depth charges are set shallow and lie on the starboard side.  At first no failures noticed.  I bring the boat deep quickly.  At depth A +60 meters a new depth charge approach.  6 depth charges set deep.  Although I have the sense of being directly overrun again, the depth charges fall behind the boat. Only the first one causes heavy concussions.
Eject 2 Bolde and attempt to get beneath the convoy behind the wall [of bubbles from the Bolde].  By this the planned submerged attack is spoiled.  Two locating vessels keep me submerged for a long time. Situation is not clear, because the sound locator has suffered with the first depth charges and for a long time I do not know what is nearby.  Am circled numerous times by two vessels equipped with "Asdic", however, no more depth charges fall.

06.27   Shot from tube IV.  Target speed = 9 knots, target angle = 85°, lead angle = 17°, FAT-intial run 3000 meters, range 1500 meters.  Both loops right long.
After 1st shot recognized, that beginning position [target angle] was over estimated, therefore, 2nd shot with new shooting data.   Both missed.  Reason: target speed set too low.
Twice I try to shoot but the attempt does not succeed, because it has cleared very much and has been getting light.  Furthermore, the starboard flank escort has dropped back, so that a surface attack is no longer possible.

Now a lengthy pursuit begins with a lot of depth charges, but none close to the boat, as only light vibrations appear.  Search group evidently works by listening, "Asdic" (chirping) and a type of sonic depth finder detection.  Although the detection impulses can be heard from time to time without the G.H.G. in the whole boat, from the position of the depth charges I do not believe were detected.  Several times I am directly overrun by an escort vessel, or driven slowly around in a narrow circle.
        Own efforts:
Attempt to place the escorts, who always place themselves approximately 90° to each other, astern.  Silent running.  Placing astern does not succeed in the long run.  Therefore, initially tried to run off in direction 50° later 180°.  Drainage equipment not operated.  I steer between depth A +60 meters and 2 A meters.   Each pump out - short blowing of main ballast tank 3 - results in receiving 6-9 depth charges. Unfortunately, with stern down angle the boat makes loud sounds from the damaged starboard shaft. Only limited sound reception.

I have expected this question.  Examination proves that the sometimes very strong sounds, which appear particularly with stern down angle, are caused only by the starboard shaft.  With this the boat is no longer ready for day attack.  However, this is important for the next full moon period.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the K.T.B. of "U-230" (Siegmann) from 1.4.43-24.5.43.

The boat participated in 2 convoy operations.  The Kommandant operated correctly and in both cases gained contact.  On the "Drossel-convoy" from 7 May - 8 May the boat had no attack opportunities due to air and depth charge pursuit.
The favorable attack position on 12 June was a failure due to a miss.  After the Kommandant could no longer reach attack position.
Otherwise no remarks.

Accredited success:
1 aircraft was caused to crash without munitions expenditure.
