Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

SW 6, Sea 7, overcast, freshening, rising Swell, Vis. changing
02.10   1 shadow in sight bearing 200°T.  Due to the heavy seas and the greatly changing visibility the enemy was seen very near for a short moment as the moon appeared. The Watch Officer had initially turned away hard, I expected surprise by patrol vessels in this area. While turning away I recognized a steamer of approximately 4000 GRT. A flush decker, low smokestack, 2 masts.  Engine maneuvers.  The first bearings give no shift.
02.33   With a sudden deterioration of visibility the enemy is lost from sight, turned towards the last visual bearing.  Because up to 02.55 hours the steamer did not come in sight again, dived to listen.  Sound bearing in 300°T.  Surfaced, pursued.
03.40   Again dived to listen.  Sound bearing now 30°T.  Surfaced.  Pursued.
04.46   Nothing seen.  Dived to listen.  Faint sound bearing in 70°T.  Surfaced, pursued.
06.23   To now nothing seen.  Dived again, no further sound bearings.
    07.00   Pursuit broken off.
The screws sounds were overlaid or obscured by quite loud scratching and knocking sounds.  Must be apart from the boat may be explained by the heavy seas.  The boat still rolls significantly at depth A -30 meters.

19.45   Steamer in sight bearing 250°T, unfortunately freshens up very strongly, always between dense snow squalls, have contact up to 20.45 hours.  Twice I encounter snow squalls which rob visibility. In each case I close immediately on the last visual bearing. Twice this succeeds, but suddenly I am quite near ahead him, because visibility improvement occurred unevenly.  The steamer is out to the mast, smokestack and bridge. I do not dive, but come about immediately into a snow squall located behind me.  Drive in in the edge of this squall.  Suddenly again the steamer is obscured by snow and hail - a squall which does not want to end. Came about and again closed on the enemy.

    02.15   Fan from tubes 1 and 3.
Was a miss, because due to an order transmission failure the wrong enemy bow was set.  At the same moment I recognize the enemy turned about 40° towards me. I can still just take the 2nd fan.

Precarious situation, because again a strong hailstorm robs me of visibility. When it clears up after a few minutes a ship of the convoy is approaching exactly towards me. I am in ramming position. It is immediately clear that with my low, one diesel ahead KF and with the high seas I can not get clear on the surface. Crash dive. While diving I still the sensation that I will be rammed. At 10 meters the propellers of the steamer pass over me.
02.28   Unfortunately, the sound locator fails again completely. No defense, unclear sounds in all 4 sectors. Believe that defense is hindered strongly by the weather conditions. Use the time in order to reload.
04.30 AK 0231 No further sounds.  Surfaced.  On surfacing I see a faint light bearing 60°T.  Believe it is an escort who recovers survivors.   I had run up 5 minutes towards the light when it extinguished.  Suspect stern sweeper and try to avoid it, I run into another escort which now sets a faint steaming light, turns towards me and apparently locates me with a red searchlight.

I try to escape from the enemy on the surface which succeeds with 3 times AK against the seas after 25 minutes. In the process the bridge staff gets in danger of going overboard. Loss of 5 pairs of binoculars.

Naval square AJ 3998 was hunted by escort vessels with red searchlight.

I turn back again slowly towards.  I manage to push past the escort and run at AK on course 60° to the convoy.
09.10 AK 1954 Bright flash and explosion on the port side, is believed on the bridge to be artillery fire. Coming closer, it turns out to be a torpedo hit on a large steamer of about 6000 GRT. A few minutes later I see ahead four steamers of the convoy in double keel line. They are all older freighter type ships of 5000 GRT with cut off masts and lowered areas of the ship's side where the gunwale is at the same height as the deck fore and aft.  Had the same characteristics of the steamer I sank.

At first no escort is seen to starboard.  I suspect it is running up in a hail storm to port behind me. I turn in to approach.
    09.24 AK 1954 2 two-fans on 2 overlapping 5000 GRT ships.
09.25   [illegible hand written shooting data]

After 2800 meters running time an explosion column at the level of the smokestack on the last steamer shot at was observed by me and a watchstander.  In the boat a torpedo detonation was perceived.  No further observations because a snow squall took visibility away in the direction of the convoy.
09.43   When it suddenly clears it is light and I am positioned before a corvette with target angle 0° on which I can make out all details without binoculars.  Crash dive.  Initially no attack, then 3 depth charges far off.  Ran submerged against the sea.  Want to reload one tube and in the process have bad luck.  Torpedo in tube 2 is a tube runner.  No fault of the personnel.

Decision:  Want to run towards the enemy submerged to attack in the twilight.  Day attack is not possible due to the weather.  Reloaded.
    18.50   Fast propeller sounds nearby.
At the same moment the steamer stops, up to now it had run at slow speed.  Evidently there are very good listening conditions today. The noises are gone and bearings on the propeller sounds are easily determined. Fast propeller sounds seem to be a corvette which stops every 25 minutes and after 25 minutes briefly goes again.
Own behavior:  Reloading broken off, believed it would be heard.  Went to depth A +20 meters and ran off to the south.  For about 1 hour another escort vessel appears which behaves similarly. Boat can not be held at periscope depth therefore must remain submerged, I hope that the escort vessels move off.
22.15   Escort vessel sounds are more distant.
Up to now the steamer has not started up.
    22.43   No further sound bearings.
Surfaced.  Ran to the sighting location.  It is a very dark night.  Searched for the steamer in the vicinity, often dived to listen.
23.30   Steamer shear abandoned and pursued the convoy at highest speed course 60°.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the K.T.B. of "U-230" (Siegmann) from 4.2.43 to 31.3.43.

[first paragraph of several sentences is illegible]
Operation on the "Raubgraf-convoy" was broken off due to lack of fuel in a position that had become hopeless due to incorrect navigation.
The independents on 21 February and 5 March were unfortunately not caught despite correct effort.
Without a doubt, during this voyage the commander collected a great many valuable experiences which will be very useful to him in future, and with continuous toughness also lead to even greater success.
  Accredited successes:
  1 steamer        5000 GRT sunk.
  1 steamer        5000 GRT sunk.
