Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

W 2, Sea 1-2 Surfaced to ventilate.  After 2 minutes while blowing the boat cut under.  No. 1 and No. 3 were washed away.  Runddipol [Fu.M.B. antenna] was torn away.  Boat went to depth 12 meters.  Conning tower hatch was closed in time.  Remaining bridge watch held on to the M.G. until the boat surfaced again.  Cause not explained.  No changed in ventilation, normal blowing and searched for those overboard.  Bridge watch was wearing life jackets.  When it was  light, both were made noticed by shouting, found and fished out.  No medical issues.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the K.T.B. "U-218" (Becker, Richard) from 19.9. - 8.12.43.

The boat was assigned a special task in the area of the Antilles.  Unfortunately the mines were not laid by Kommandant in the sense of a wide area fouling and not close enough off the harbor.  The intended effect can only be achieved by a wide dispersion, as foreseen in the operations order.  Otherwise the Kommandant managed his boat with previously proven skill and seamanship ability.

Accredited success:  1 sailing vessel 900 GRT sunk
                                  On 27 October mines laid.
