Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

Note:  The body of this KTB was transcribed - probably post war.  Only the cover page and the B.d.U. comments were from the original.

12.00 MT 6299 I am on the direct course line from the southern tip of Ceylon to Calcutta.  Because air reconnaissance flies in this area, I believe traffic runs on this course line.  I intend to move back and forth here on course 20° and 200°.  One diesel LF the other ready to start.

13.30   Surfaced.  Because the sounder shows 160 meters after the evening navigation fix the boat was offset at 3 knots to the south.  I go again to the north, to pick up Madras-Calcutta traffic.  In the darkness a few lights shine through from Madras, however ship traffic is not detected.

    04.00 MT 5437 Day's run: 79 nm
07.00   Surfaced, ventilated the boat.  Because the cloudiness at the moment is favorable, I remained on the surface.  After 2 hours the clouds increase quickly.  I must dive again, so as not to be surprised by aircraft.
15.45 MT 5454 Surfaced.  Convoy in sight bearing 250°T.  Speed 9 knots, range = 9 nm.  __ ships, 4 escorts, 2 aircraft.  Course 225° (Madras) because the convoy will reach harbor at the latest in 3 hours, plus it is a bright moonlight night, I can no longer reach attack position.
13.50 NE-Monsoon 3-4, moderately rough sea, bright moonlit night, Vis. good Crash dive!
Aircraft is approaching.  I remain unnoticed.  I'll, move off now and go into square 51.
Directly before the harbor one can only have a random success.  In the listening gear nothing was distinguished.

21.56 MT 5136 Shadow in sight bearing 325°T.  Large tanker range = 8 nm. Bow left, target angle 50°.  Enemy course 195°.  Went to AK and attempted to maneuver ahead on course 200-230°.  Ship zigzagged half hourly 20° around general course.  In the bright moonlit night I cannot angle in closer.  Enemy bearing shifts slowly ahead.  Auxiliary engines were used (at 440 RPM 16.5 knots).  The bearing seems to steady.  The starboard clutch slips momentarily.  After 10 minutes it is in service again.  The bearing continues to shift ahead.  After 2 hours 15 minutes the enemy bears 245°T in another 10 minutes 270°T.  I give up the fight as hopeless because he can do better.

01.10 Moonset Port diesel out of service, the disc of an intake valve is broken in two.  One lies in the cylinder the other in the exhaust gas piping.
    06.00   Day's run:  135 nm
    07.10 MT 5128 Crash dive!  Aircraft bearing 285°T.  Range = 10000 meters.  Course 180°.
    08.20 MT 5122 Surfaced.
12.57 MT 2788 Crash dive!  Flying boat bearing 165°T.  Range - 9000 meters.
18.00 MT 2785 Surfaced.  Why is there suddenly so much air?  Either I was seen last night and squealed on or a convoy will come through here shortly.  I suspect the latter, however remained at periscope depth for 5 hours for safety and camouflage reasons.  In no case do I want to be driven from this area.  Port diesel is in service again.
NE-Monsoon 3, clear sky, bright moonlit night

    12.12.43
    16th day
04.00 MT 5134 Smoke feather in sight bearing 5°T.  Turned towards is.  Soon there were several smoke feathers and a few masts are recognized though the extended periscope.  A convoy on course 220°, bow left.  Now I'm exactly ahead of him and dove.  Ran to meet at LF until I was able to find out more about it.  2 columns each of 4 ships staggered with on another.  Forward screen 1 destroyer, 1 corvette.  Port screen 2 corvettes.  Starboard screen could not be recognized.  Later behind the convoy came 1 destroyer.  I came on course 290° unseen through the screen.  The target angle of the aft, closer column at a range of 3000 meters was already 35°.  Supposedly the Etos run only 1200-1400 meters.  Therefore periscope in and ran closer for 5 minutes.  When I extend the periscope again, the entire formation has zigzagged about 70° to starboard and I am at a disadvantage.  All nice big whoppers.
NE-Monsoon, flat sea, lightly cloudy, Vis. good
I must have at the convoy again.  Came to course 18°.  After an hour propeller sounds bearing 250°T and 270°T.  A destroyer and a corvette in sight.

    06.00 MT 5159 Day's run:  99 nm

        Target angle = 90°.    Lead angle = 14.5°.
        Range = 1400 meters
        Torpedo was a surface runner.
        Dammed awkward thing.
    20.15 MT 5419 Surfaced.  Followed.
21.30   The steamer is soon in sight again.
Suddenly I am before a destroyer group which was difficult to make out in front of a dark cloud bank.  The ships run at hight speed.  At depth  A -30 meters "Asdic"  is heard in the boat.  Propeller sounds were fainter. Went to silent running.  One time the destroyers are to port, then to starboard.  So the game goes on for two hours.  In the meantime the boat falls slowly to depth 2A +10 meters.  The propeller sounds move off in direction 180°T.

    13.12.43
    17th day MT 5724
01.30 NE 4, lightly rough sea, medium cloudy, medium NE-Swell, Vis. good Surfaced, nothing in sight.  My steamer is away.  I cannot follow, because in the adjacent area there is now a Japanese U-boat.  At the wishes of the Japanese Authorities (Discussion on 25 November 1943 with Japanese B.d.U. Indian Ocean Herr Kont.Adm. Ishioka) I should avoid a meeting with the boat.
    06.00   Day's run:  174 nm
12.00 MT 5796 I intend  to proceed at low speed on the connecting line from Ceylon - Madras.

06.00   Day's run:  137 nm.  Surfaced, ventilated the boat.  Dove again in 30 minutes, because surprise is easily possible with the clouds.

    16.12.43
20th day LD 5322 During the last patrol the boat had an oil trace.  Despite continuous examination it has not gone away completely.  In the dock there were a few porous spots in the welds were repaired.  Since departure on this patrol from the beginning there was a light oil sheen.  As soon as the boat worked in the seas the sheen became a trace.  This morning the trace became very heavy, as if the bilges had been pumped.  If this problem is not found, I will be forced to leave the coast and to search for my salvation the open ocean.

04.38 LD 5344 A steamer came in sight out of a rain squall ahead to port.  Range 5000 meters.  Bridge and superstructure were fully out.  Masts capped.  Boat stood before the light horizon and was recognized immediately.  Steamer turned to starboard and ran off on course 120°.  Because I was seen I no longer dived, instead steered a northerly course at high speed, until mastheads were seen just on the horizon.  Then continued on at low speed.  Masthead soon came high out.  After he lost us the steamer turned and steered a northerly course.  The bow was left, target angle 10°.
NE-Monsoon 4-5, moderately rough sea, overcast, drizzle, at times showers, Vis. changing (bad-good), 1011 mb
06.08 Day's run:  163 nm Dove immediately so that he would not get us back in sight.  Ran to meet him submerged.  Because the bow was left, target angle 20° came to course 110°.  As expected the steamer zigzagged from 90° - 30° every 5 minutes.  At a range of 5000 meters he got far out the west and changed his course in 10° increments to 0°.  The target angle was always 90-100°.  Still a faint smoke feather in sight.  Surface and pursued.

14.58 LC 2197 Ship still floats.  I don't want to wait any longer.  Coup de grâce from tube 3.  Range - 2500 meters.  Hit aft 20 meters.  An enormous detonation tears the ship apart and it sinks immediately, minutes afterward further explosions are heard from the deep.  The ship was American type C 1 with the radio call sign wtoh, 1400 GRT (According to Rower the steamer "J  O  S  E    N  A  V  A  R  R  O" 7244 GRT, in square LC 2197).  Course was for the southern tip of Ceylon, probably with war material for the Burma Front.  In the boats and rafts there were about 300 men.  At the giving of the coup de grâce the cannon crews were still on board at their stations.

    03.15 LC 1647
05.08   After 2 hours I came to course 270°.  Because the southern front with was quickly covered with rain clouds and large showers were moving there, dived for a test dive and all around listening.  Very good visibility to the west and north.
05.20   Propeller sounds bearing 230°T.  122 RPM.  Nothing was seen, however the sector was clear of clouds and the visibility was very good.  The bearing shifted astern.  At periscope depth nothing was seen.
06.00 Day's run:  162 nm I slowly went higher and surfaced.  The last bearing was 8°T.  Also in the surfaced condition in the periscope nothing was seen.  I came to course 20° and ran after.  Nothing.  Because in the extended periscope there is a height of eye of 9.5 meters and a large ship has a mast height of 30-35 meters I should see it at a range of around 18 nm.  Nothing was sighted, therefore the ship must be further away.  At a range of 20 nm and courses of 90-100° (Colombo or southern tip of Ceylon) it is a fast runner.  Speed of advance 19-24 knots.  Based on these considerations, I do not take up pursuit.
Because the listening conditions in this area are very good, in the future I will dive for all around listening twice by day and twice by night.

EbyN 3, flat Sea, half overcast, Vis. medium, 986 mb
[The entry at right is the comment of the reviewing authority, perhaps the Flotilla or B.d.U. and not U-178] Set lights and no bomb throwing speak strongly in favor of the idea that it was a standing normal reconnaissance aircraft and that the enemy did not expect a U-boat in a certain place.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote
                      on the K.T.B. of "U 178" (Spahr) from 25.11.43 - 24.5.1944.

The Kommandant took over the boat at the halfway point of a long patrol.  The long stay of the boat in tropical waters made itself very noticeable and limited operational capability.  Surfaced speed, battery and especially the torpedoes had their efficiency strongly deteriorated.  As a result many seemingly favorable attack opportunities were not brought to a success.
The behavior and accomplishments of the crew during the 14 1/2 month operation, mostly in tropical waters, are particularly noteworthy.

Accredited success:  1 steamer 7400 GRT sunk.
