Spencer's boarding party, led by LCDR John B. Oren (standing in the stern) and LT Ross Bullard (directly to Oren's left), casts off in the pulling whaleboat.  The motor whaleboat had been holed by the explosion of a shell fired by the Armed Guard of a passing merchant ship.  This delayed the boarding and may have saved lives.  Mike Hall, Joe Dedo and LT Ross got aboard U-175 but the boat was sinking fast and they had to abandon the attempt before they entered the boat.
