Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

17.50   Smoke feather in sight bearing 270°T.
18.00   To the right of the smoke feather suddenly from the light haze a black wall like a destroyer.  In order not to be seen, crash dive!  Submerged recognized that the steamer ejects thick smoke every 1-2 minutes.  The destroyer was therefore an illusion.  The smoking seemed to me at the moment suspicious.  Steamer bearing barely shifted out.
18.38   Surfaced, only smoke and the forward mast of the steamer is recognized.

    18.38   Maneuvered ahead.
19.06   Port lookout reported a periscope abeam to port 500 meters.  Hard to starboard.  On easing ruder failure.  Thereupon I ordered crash dive.  The lookout swore to have seen a thick night periscope which was thought to be a U-boat trap working with a submarine.  However, listening and all around sweep give no indication of a submarine.  Cautiously I ran off a bit.
20.00   The steamer is now in sight in 330°T, 4 nm away.  2 masts, 1 smokestack, about 4000 tons.  By plotting it runs about 9 knots, course 65°.  It now smokes only moderately, seems harmless, moved away from him to the limit of visibility.
21.00   Surfaced, steamer bears 0°T, 10 nm away.  Maneuvered ahead.  Reported the steamer by Short Signal, to possibly hear if the steamer is neutral.

00.17   Am positioned ahead of the steamer, dived for twilight attack.
00.45   Steamer has set lights.  I looked at him from 100 meters away.  He is Irish, prescribed illumination, certainly unarmed.  Let him go, without stopping.
01.37   Surfaced, course for the meeting point with Schäfer.
Outgoing Radio Message:  Steamer was Irish, did not stop.  Position VO 3683 inexact.  On time at meeting point with Schäfer only at higher speed, running at 11 knots.  S 1, light Swell, 1009 mb, +15°C, steady.
                                                               - Beucke -
02.10   Shadow in sight ahead.  Turned stern to.  Steamer lays beam on, bearly shifeted in 10 minutes, then suddenly out strongly.  Maneuvered ahead 1/2 hour.  Steamer bearing stays fixed.  Have the feeling that he has seen or heard us.  The night is very bright.  Turned towards the steamer despite target angle 90°.  At 2500 meters it is easily seen with the naked eye.  Suddenly barely shifted, had nearly stopped.  Shot from 2000 meters 1 Ato and thereafter a 2-fan Eto.
        Range = 2000 meters, target speed = 7 knots, target angle  = 90°, torpedo speed = 40 knots, lead angle = +10°.
        Range = 1800 meters, target speed = 3 knots, target angle = 92°, torpedo speed = 30 knots, lead angle = +10°

        Firing angle 11.7°, depth = 3 meters, tubes I-III.
        Miss.
The fast independent was about 5000-6000 tons.  Because I am convinced that the fellow detected me I let him go.  Possible trap.

On the fixed periscope the tilting mirror is smashed and was provisionally replaced by a ground glass mirror.  Lght intensity is reduced by about 50%, the enlargement is very out of focus.  The air search periscope is flooded.  Drying attempts were to no avail.  Also the internal optics must be ruined.
To remain ready to crash dive, for the most part the work must be limited to the dark part of the night.
Because I can still not decide, to give up the operations area in the Gulf of Mexico, I report by Radio Message to B.d.U.:  Fixed periscope smashed tilting mirror is provisionally replaced.  Air search periscope is unusable.

14.00   Crash dive for aircraft astern, course athwart, coming out of the clouds.  At depth 70 meters 3-4 bangs in quick succession.  Only minor failures.
15.35   Surfaced.  I had just given the order to blow when I saw a land-based aircraft pounce on us out of a cloud at 2000-3000 meters.
15.56   Crash dive.  At depth 45 meters the first aircraft bombs explode.  The aft diving plane fails in the hard up position.  Boat takes on a strong down by the stern attitude, rises and was caught at depth 25 meters by stopping the motors.  The third bomb falls later further off, the boat went to depth A +20 meters.
    16.00 EB 2287 Position.
17.40   Boat went to depth 50 meters, then to 30 meters.  As soon as we reach 30 meters 2 further bombs explode, about 100 meters away.  May be a coincidence.  I must accept an oil trace or strong air blowing from the forward periscope, which I had observed at 15.35 hours, or that we were seen at depth 30 meters.
20.00 EB 2279 Went to the old depth.
21.15   Turbine sounds in 130°T and 210°T, shifted ahead and astern, were tracked constantly (only with the KDB, the GHG picked up nothing).
Waited until sunset at 22.00 hours, because I still must expect being sighted by aircraft at periscope depth.

On the basis of today's experience, I am again considering the chances of success for operating in the Gulf of Mexico.
      The following is determined:
      1)  The enemy air is heavy and alert.  After a dive for aircraft I have little prospect of getting further information on the aircraft.  If no bombs fall, I do not know if we were seen.  The second dangerous attack today would probably not have happened to me with an operable air search periscope.
      2)  There are full moon nights ahead.  The fixed periscope is much too weak for a submerged attack in the full moon.  Therefore in the next period I only have poor attack opportunities.
      3)  Another disadvantage is the failure of the depth sounder and the bad GHG which did not get better despite the shipyard work before leaving.  I am quite dependent on both devices under the coast.  Together I find the failure of the air search periscope and the weakness of the aft periscope as not a minor handicap in the strongly watched sea area and judge the success possibilities in a free sea area as greater.  Because the B.d.U. has left the decision to me in the last Radio Message, I decide to go to area DO/DP.
01.19   Therefore I send the Short Signal "No".

13.01 EO 2252 Steamer plotted on course 265°, 12 knots.  Am ahead of the steamer, dived to attack.

14.36   2-fan from tubes II and III, Etos.
        Perfect data, 123 RPM clocked.
Target speed = 12 knots, target angle = red 70°, lead angle = 22°, range 1200 meters, depth 3 meters, spread angle 4°,  miss.
By sound bearing the left torpedo passed just before the bow, the right torpedo 15° right of the steamer, apparently a gyro angle failure.
14.38   Shot from tube IV, Eto
Target speed = 12 knots, target angle red 90°, lead angle = 23.5°, range = 1200 meters, depth 3 meters.
When the shot went, the enemy turned hard starboard in target angle 180°, therefore miss.
Steamer stopped, shot 3 minutes later with artillery in the vicinity of the boat, then ran off to the north.  I accept that the right torpedo  (fan shot) broached and betrayed the boat.  It is also possible that I was seen before the second shot despite the most economical periscope use.
16.06   Surfaced, enemy bears 330°T, 8 nm away.
In the mean time the port diesel  is ready for GF (oil pump dismantled colling water pump disengaged).

Enemy plotted on course 305°, 12 knots.  At sunset the steamer bore 65°T, passed out of sight.  I expect that at darkness the steamer will take course for Trinidad (265°).  This was confirmed by sound bearings.  Due to the bright moon, I initially held off to the west,  to attack after moonset (24.00 hours).

From previous experience, even under the most favorable conditions, the range of both listening devices is still not greater than the eye, usually far lower.

13.55   Crash dive for aircraft, abeam to starboard about 2000 meters away, flying parallel.  Boat gets away badly.  At depth 20 meters 2 aircraft bombs fall, very close.  Apparently one ahead to starboard, the other astern to port.  Everything is a mess.  Both diving planes fail.  Boat settled to depth A +80 meters, despite all men forward, GF and stern down attitude.  Water intake in the stern room.  With a short blow of 5 and 1 via the emergency blow valve, balanced and pumped at depth A meters.  Because there was even more negative buoyancy, leaking torpedo tubes were suspected.  After diving plane was first in service after pumping the stern room, in which 8 tons of water had run.  Water intake took place via the hull valve for flooding the torpedo compensating tanks, whose flange detached from the pressure hull.  Was tightened, then held fairly well.
Failures:  attack periscope, fire control system, E-motor spare cooling pump, bearing plate cracked and brush holder broken.  Gyrocompass, nearly all daughter compasses shattered, illuminated magnetic compass, both depth gages in the control room, many command elements, less important apparatus and lighting

From 20.00 hours to 23.00 hours [over deck] canisters examined.
Tube 7 completely smashed, as well as the torpedo.  The torpedo was wedged in, the tube made free flooding.  Tube 8 was half full of water, (overpressure) the torpedo slightly dented in several places, was pulled and stored in tube 6.  Tube 8 was flooded, to get heavier forward.  Tubes 3 and 4 are dented, however dry.  The 4 empty tubes (5, 6, 9, 10) were undamaged because they were carried free flooded.
The fixed periscope is still not in service despite continual work.  Inside many parts are torn off, prisms shattered.  Unfortunately we are missing the necessary tools.

Attack periscope is now checked in all parts and repaired except for the lenses in the upper part.  Opening the bottleneck again to get to the point of damage is not possible.  The periscope is unusable.  Because in the current condition I believe the success possibility of the boat is slight and after the effect of the last aircraft bombs I do not trust the sensitive apparatus of the torpedoes, I believe return transit and corresponding early completion of shipyard overhaul is more correct than lingering another 14 days in the operations area.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the Kriegstagebuch "U-173" from 7.6. - 20.9.42.

Even taking into account that it is the first patrol of the boat and Kommandant and operational freedom was limited by damage to both periscopes, the conduct patrol lasting more than 3 months was unsatisfactory.  The Kommandant is not blameless for the lack of success.  With greater toughness and more skill he could have gotten more out of it.

  In detail it is noted:
1.) Aircraft lookout during the entire patrol was unsatisfactory.  The boat was often seen and bombed.
2.) On 28 June the Kommandant was immediately inclined to suspect a boat trap. The steamer later turned out to be a harmless Irishman.
3.) On 29 June after the misses the enemy was let go too early, again because a U-boat trap was suspected. Instead of a 2- fan a 3-fan would have been more appropriate.
4.) On 6 July moved off too long submerged.  The steamer should have been a certain prey.
5.) On 8 August again a 3-fan would have been more correct.  Also this steamer was lost by awkward behavior at dusk.
6.) Am 17 August after the many failures the Kommandant should have forced success and shot a 4-fan. Steamer was also again lost at dusk. To maneuver ahead by listening is wrong and has little prospect of success.  Sound bearings are a very good indication.  They must be used to get visual contact as quickly as possible.
