Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

[depth 2A +30 = 190 meters]

Heavy detonation over the boat after 12 minutes 40 seconds after leaving the tube at depth A +35 meters.  Most severe concussion in the boat, lights fail, manometer, auxiliary machinery etc.  Water intake in the control room (flange for fine flooding of the regulating tank leaks very heavily).  Boat settles strongly.  By lightly blowing main ballast tank 5 and pumping , and GF caught the boat for the moment at depth 2A +30 meters and rose slowly again venting into the boat.  Shortly after the detonation in the boat one could hear objects strike the upper deck.
14.12 - 14.14   Heard Asdic sounds, slowly growing louder and pulse rate shortening.  A short time later also indistinct propeller sounds, various RPM, various directions.
    14.15

[depth 2A +70 = 230 meters]

Boat suddenly settled again strongly.  At depth 2A +30 meters blew lightly, boat fell again despite continual pumping.  Main drain pump can no longer pump, because the pressure regulator has failed.  Back up manometer showed 2A +45 meters, bow room reported 2A +60 meters, and cracking of the frames.  By strong blowing and GF caught the boat at depth 2A +70 meters and got it to rise.
14.20 - 15.20 BE 1355 Continual various propeller sounds, Asdic and circular saw.
14.31   Boat went to depth A +40 meters to pump the bilge (control room bilge 7 tons, diesel bilge 4 tons).  According to later calculations, by the detonation the boat had [flooded] both diesel air shafts, exhaust air duct, blow line, a dinghy container and two ammunition container.  In the course of 1 1/2 hours at least a further 10 tons of bilge water.  In the control room through the hull valve flange for fine flooding of the regulating tanks and the drain for the diesel air head valve, in the diesel room through and drainage for all head and foot valves.

Altogether serious damage (except lighting fixtures, manometers, etc.) was determined.
a) Over deck
1. Piping of the intake duck was crushed,
2. Diesel air head valve port and starboard, snorkel and exhaust air head valve leak, as well as the drains of all head and foot valves.
3. Exhaust gas piping cracked.
4. Vent piping main ballast tank 7 cracked.

6. Over deck container for rubber boat, 2 ammunition containers cracked or dented.
7. Linkage for the outer exhaust gas valve bent.
8. UZS 4 failed (can no longer be turned).
b) Control room
1. 50% of the water level indicators for regulating tanks and regulating and reserve fuel oil tanks cracked.
2. Regulating valve in the high-pressure air installation cracked and sprung.
3. Bolts of the flange for the fine flooding of the regulating tanks have detached (water intake).
4. Voice tube from the bridge-conning tower leaks.
5. Magnetic compass failed.
6. Air search periscope completely failed (flooded and winch out of service).  Fixed periscope out of service.
7. Air bottle group 2 and 5 leak.
8. Piping in the express piping for the negative buoyancy tanks cracked.
9. Echolot sounder failed.
c) Diesel room
1 Welded seam fuel oil delivery valve housing main ballast tank 4 and 2a cracked.
2. Port diesel clutch knocks.
3. Spare lubricating oil pump flanges broken.
4. Spare cooling water pump housing cracked.
5. Further minor damage to cooling water and lubricating oil piping.
d) E-motor room
1. Suction duct Battery 1 cracked.
2. Rudder position indicator, engine telegraphs and RPM indicators failed.
3. Fresh water generator float linkage broken.
At the detonation failed: batter automatic switch 1, both motor circuit breakers, forward diving plane, main rudder.

14.31 BE 1355 Propeller sounds at times very loud, briefly heard in the boat, at times Asdic and circular saw.
16.00 - 17.00 BE 1355 Continual various propeller sounds, circular saw.  Asdic no longer heard.

31.10.44 Assumption:  the detonation may have originated by a reversal shot hit over the boat.
Reasoning:  1.)  A miss was unexplained with target angle 0° and shooting angle approximately 0° with an operable torpedo, range at the shot between 2000 and 3000 meters.
      2.  A destroyer would not just throw one depth charge.
      3.  In the bow and stern room  there were propeller sounds shortly before the detonation, which suddenly stopped, and a whirring and rushing sound was heard.
      4.  On the over deck after surfacing steel explosion pieces were found.  In my opinion, due to their exceptional thickness, these do not originate from a depth charge.
      5.  Following the detonation in the listening gear propeller sounds with speed changes, Asdic and now and again circular saw sounds were perceived, which were completely random and did not suggest a continued pursuit.  Since we were forced, by high speed settings and ongoing pumping and other noise to hold the boat, it would have been easy to hear us.

After very difficult repairs and long futile searching for faults, in AL 33 in bad weather (Wind 7, Sea 4-5) we attempted the last possible repairs on the snorkel with the snorkel mast erected (snorkel air intake duct was lifted by wedging at the level of the bridge cladding).  The snorkel mast still does not lock itself, however during testing it was found that the cuff now holds reasonably tight so shortly before entering the Icelandic passage, the snorkel system was limitedly operable again.  The success of this repair is, in addition to the Chief Engineer, primarily due to the full commitment under the harshest conditions of Maschinisten Pullem and Masch.Gefr. Raulf [Raulfs Fritz] and Petersen.  Similarly the blowing piping was welded in over 3 hours of work lying in icy water.  The lack of any documentation and drawings on the snorkel system was particularly detrimental to repairs and locating the faults.

The following repairs were carried out on the snorkel system:
1.) Blowing piping cracks were welded.
2.) Removed the manifold on the air intake duct. Outlet opening was tightly welded to duct.
3.) Snorkel mast drain was set blind (blind flange was later removed again.)
4.) Snorkel air head valve made tight.  Linkage adjusted.
5.) With the snorkel mask erect the cuff was wedged up and secured against sea impacts.  Preparations are considerably delayed, especially at the beginning of snorkeling, by lengthy draining of the piping.  Depth control was very difficult due to the great amount of bilge water.  Due to failure of the connection piping from the air intake duct to the air intake head valve normal snorkel boat ventilation is not possible. New ventilation: Rubber-metal ring element in the suction line of the intake air was removed.  Supply fan draws from the resulting opening and blows via the supply air ducting. Connection of the supply- and return air and return air duct in both end rooms. Airway was sufficient, CO gas was not detectable.
The following important systems could not be repaired:
1.) Air search periscope completely failed.
2.) Fixed periscope can only be turned by fine hand operation. Despite drying optics are somewhat turbid.  Winch often fails.
3.) Magnetic compass failed.
4.) Echolot sounder out of service.

3.) Magnetic compass failed.
4.) Echolot sounder out of service.
5.) Blowing piping, entire air duct and drain of the head and foot valve leaks.  Drain partially flanged off.
6.) Leaks in the high pressure air installation in the over deck.
7.) Vent piping main ballast tank 7 cracked.  Carried on with the emergency vent valve
8.) Spare lubricating oil pump and spare cooling water pump only limitedly operable.
9.) Snorkel installation limitedly operable.  Because of that the snorkel mast remains erected.

      1.  General.
The snorkel proved itself excellently.  In the Bay of Biscay, in an area, where with each surfacing of the boat there was a Fliege detection, using the snorkel it was never caught.  The confidence of the crew snorkeling has increased more and more.  This was demonstrated best with its temporary failure.
No health disorders, poisoning, etc., ever occurred.

- 53 -

Snorkeling could also be carried out in the tropics for a short time, but under increased stress on the diesel crew.
      2.  Charging.

Attached charging with both diesels LF has proven to be a favorable and economical method of charging.

Advantages over 1 charging and 1 driving diesel:
      1.)  more economical
      2.)  faster
      3.)  less easily heard
4.)  with crash dive both shafts are available immediately.
5.)  in nice medium seas depth control wise much better, in increased seas only possible with both shafts.
Charging current strength:  1500 Amp-hours per battery.
Fast charging, 1 diesel pure charging, 1 diesel LF with attached charging (2000 Amp-hours) was only used in specially supported cases without apparent disadvantages.
As high charging, with long uninterrupted snorkeling operations in 4 weeks, charging was carried out once up to 200 Amps, 146 Volts.  Lowest battery capacity in doing so 1500 Amp-hours.  I do not think a daily charge up to 200 Amps, 146 Volts is expedient, because snorkel time and therefore locatability is extended disproportionately (with pauses for all around listening of at least 4 hours: all around listening finally not feasible.)  Exhaust gas pressure did not get over 0.5 atmospheres.  200 mb under-pressure was never reached.
      3.  Periscopes.
The only drawback to both sides diesel drive is the strain on the periscopes, which is not much lower at one side LF.
Initially, both periscopes were manned.  The strain on the turning motor of the fixed periscope turned out to be too great in the long run.  Because of ongoing failures after the 4th week only the air search periscope was manned, which held up reasonably well-until its failure through enemy action.  With only one periscope, vibrations remain within normal limits.  Rarely occurring strong vibrations can be compensated for by only a small amount of retraction.  The leaking at the stuffing box gradually increased.  In action the periscope also held up.  Perhaps with only a small increase in the periscope shears vibrations could be significantly reduced.
Seawater entering the hydraulic oil installation was very troublesome (in 25 days up to 1.5% (as a result constant disturbances in the periscope system).  Cause likely to be the erect snorkel mast at greater depths (50 meters).  Attention is drawn to the suggestion of the Chief Engineer (water separation hydraulic oil system periscope-snorkel) in the KTB Maschine.  With oil renewal with lubricating oil, the hydraulic oil installation could be kept limitedly operable until the end.
      4.  Care of the snorkel installation.
Weekly lubrication of the snorkel in the tropics proved to be insufficient. Due to binding, the guide rod was damaged.  Damage continued even with contimuous good lubrication.

      5.  Ventilation.
Normal ventilation per the snorkel instructions.  Fans were shut off due to water entry.
5 minutes of ventilation day proved to be fully adequate.
Ventilation by under-pressure by means of the E-compressor was not proven.
      6. Execution of snorkel operations.
In strongly air monitored areas (Iceland Passage - return harbors) the following snorkel operation was carried out.
[3 snorkel periods each night] Snorkeling only at night, preferably at Program and Sonnen times.  To begin 3 x 20 minute snorkel evolutions, later 3 snorkel cruises consisting of 2 x 20 minute evolutions and to conclude 3 x 20 minute snorkel evolutions until the battery is full (510 Amps, 146 Volts).  After each 20 minutes of snorkeling about 5 minutes all around listening.  Between the individual snorkeling periods at night (about 2 hours) both E-motors LF, day (11 hours) most economical cruise setting: 1 E-motor 70 RPM.
Advantages:  The battery is always nearly full (battery meter normally not more than 1400 Amperes withdrawal); shortest snorkel periods with about 2-hour pauses significantly reducing locating and listening danger, by frequent snorkeling, charging takes place with low charging currents (each time reached about 510 Amps, thereby only slightly decrease battery capacity).  Day's run of about 65 nm.  If day's run is irrelevant (operations area) most economical cruise:  1 E-motor 2 x KF (70 RPM). In so doing about 2 hours pure charging snorkel is sufficient to charge.  Day's run about 40 nm.
All around listening normally 20 minutes.  Only in large Sea States 25-30 minutes.  Replacement at the periscope after 1 hour at the latest.
      7.  Snorkel Runddipol antenna failed.
3 days before the conclusion of the patrol the snorkel Runddipol was torn away by sea impact.  Before that it was perfectly operable.  An improved mounting bracket is suggested.

Experience concerning Locating and Fu.M.B. Gear

      1.)  Tunis installation
      a)  Mücke
During the use of the Tunis installation (weeks 1-9 and 11-13) no detections in Mücke range.  [2-4 cm]
      b)  Fliege
The Fliege always proved itself well.  With aircraft attack shortly after departure the movements of the aircraft were observed with good bearing accuracy.  Shortly before each approach echo-like rollover of the detection tones, after a long time previously at Volume 5.  With both approaches anti-aircraft weapons were continuously aimed ahead of time, so that each time fire was so well placed and opened in a timely manor so that the aircraft could not aim its bomb throws.  The first time the aircraft turned away sharply without throwing bombs, the second time it threw three to four bombs immediately after fire was opened and then turned away sharply.  Bombs lay about 300 meters ahead of the boat in the direction of the approach.  In aircraft areas later nearly without exception saving detections.  Antenna was turned at least 5 times per minute to pick up brief locating.  It is

absolutely necessary to check Tunis or the backup Fliege antenna before surfacing and immediately after surfacing on bridge.  Several times, the previously tested antenna was inoperable after surfacing due to slight shock or cable breakage while bringing it up and mounting on the bridge. In case of prolonged surface cruise check frequently.
      2.  Wanze
In the beginning often normal Wanze detections over the snorkel Runddipol.  Wanze failed before arrival in the operations area from failure of the power supply.
      3.  Borkum
One detection on the horizontal antenna of the Biscay Cross.  Volume 4.  Illuminated aircraft abeam to port at 800 meters!
      4.  Runddipol and Biscay Cross
The bridge Runddipol has now flooded and failed on all 4 patrols of the boat at the latest after 6 weeks, without going to greater depth except for the deep dive test.  After the bridge Runddipol failed, the Biscay Cross was mounted as a backup on the Fliege, because in my opinion Tunis installation was too large and 2 antennas with free running cables on the bridge was not acceptable.  The Mücke was given up..
The snorkel Runddipol failed 3 days before the end of the patrol from sea impacts.
      5.  Puck
When the "puck" was switched on near the radio and listening rooms, its radiations were heard on the bridge in the "Tunis installation". (cable from the antenna).
        6.  Approaches without detection
05.09.44 ES 3362 Illuminated aircraft, probably type "Lerwick".  Lights:  center underside of the fuselage white, green to port!  Course 220°, altitude 100 meters, range 800 meters passed behind the boat.  Moderate visibility.  No attack, no detection.
    05.22
05.09.44 ET 1179 Uniluminated, four-engined land-based aircraft, probably type "Liberator" overflew the boat directly athwart the boat's course.  Course 230°, altitude 200 meters.  Poor visibility! No attack, no detection.
    23.18
        Dived after overflight.
08.10.44 EJ 6258 Illuminated aircraft course west.  (only white lights recognized) athwart the boat's course range 1000 meters, altitude 200 meters. About 100 meters behind this aircraft, on the same course briefly the shadow of another uniluminated aircraft observed perfectly by two reliable bridge lookouts.  (towed glider??)
08.10.44 EJ 2855 Illuminated aircraft (only white lights) course south (on opposite course) passed at about 800 meters.  First when aircraft was 800 meters abeam, via Biscay Cross - Borkum brief detection Volume 4.
With all 4 approaches Wanze was out of service.  In the first 3 approaches the bridge Runddipol was switched to Borkum.  Runddipol had been checked with the Puck some time with the Volume somewhat reduced. (moisture short).  On the last approach the Biscay Cross horizontal antenna was monitored on the spare Fliege.

                       Elektrasonnen Navigation during Snorkel Transit

When arriving in Norway the last exact navigation fix in AL 31 from AE 79 pure submerged transit.
Elektrasonne 1 was heard well from AE 58.  Sonne 20 was not heard.  Only had the chart for Sonne 1.
In my opinion Sonne provided good results, even at great range.  In AF 47 checked with a perfect celestial navigation fix.  Sonne agreed exactly. Navigation offset:  184°T, 26 nm (plotted position was still not improved by Sonne).  Because the Echolot sounder was out of service, Sonne was the single means of navigation.  In the Sonne area between AN 23 and AN 34 continuous running bearing with Sonne gave good results.  On surfacing in AN 35 difference between dead reckoning and actual position:  0°T, 5 nm (despite bad weather!).
Now and then Sonne was very irregular (10-20 difference in the number of characters).  In these cases they cannot be used.  In any case it is necessary to observe the Sonne for a longer time and possibly observe two results in each case.  The number of characters usually varies a bit or is slightly indistinct, especially at long distances.

                       Objective Point "Krista":

The 100 and 200-meter lines are too vague for a sounding series.  Nearly no current offset determined.
