THE ABOVE WAS RUN DOWN TO A VISUAL SIGHTING AND IDENTIFICATION. ON THE WAY IN WHEN 3/4 OF A MILE AWAY LANDING LIGHTS WERE TURNED ON, MET BY BURSTS OF GUN FIRE WITH TRACERS. PLANE PUT OUT LIGHTS AND TURNED TO RIGHT AND THEN CONTINUED COURSE TO TARGET, AND CUT OVER BOW OF SUBMARINE. ON RETURN PASS SUBMARINE HAD DISSAPPEARED AND COULD NOT BE PICKED UP BY RADAR. A SQUARE SEARCH WAS MADE IN AREA AND TWO HOURS LATER FOLLOWING CONTACTS APPEARED

IN ALLTHE ABOVE RUNS, SUBMARINE WAS ON THE SURFACE AND WAS SIGHTED BY THREE MEMBERS OF CREW EACH RUN WHICH WAS MADE AT MINIMUM ALTITUDE. AT NO TIME DID PLANE PASS DIRECTLY OVER SUBMARINE UNTIL FINAL RUN AT 0325Z. THIS ATTACK WAS MADE WHILE SUBMARINE WAS ON A COURSE OF 75 DEGREES AND PLANE WAS ON COURSE OF 270 DEGREES. BOMBS WERE RELEASED AND SEEN TO ENTER WATER, WITH THREE EXPLOSIONS BEING NOTED BY RADIO MAN WHO WAS OBSERVING THROUGH WINDOW IN TUNNEL GUN MOUNT IN REAR OF PLANE. THIS MAN BELIEVES THE SECOND CHARGE EITHER HIT SUBMARINE OR RESULTING EXPLOSION WAS HIDDEN IN SPRAY AND WAKE OF SUBMARINE, BOMBARDIER ALSO SAW DROP AND BOMBS ENTER WATER, AND BELIEVES HIS STICK WAS PLACED SO AT LEAST FIRST TWO BOMBS WERE WITHIN LETHAL RANGE. SPACING WAS 20 FEET.
A THIRTY MINUTE SEARCH OF THE AREA DID NOT REVEAL ANY RESULTING DAMAGE OTHER THAN SUBMERGENCE OF SUBMARINE BUT VISIBILITY WAS LOW AND WATER AREA NOT VISIBLE.
