The Radio Traffic with the capture of the Norwegian Steamer

"FILEFJELL" on 26 August 1940.

==========================================

          With the on-board aircraft launched for reconnaissance on August 26, 1940, radio communications were carried out according to the following plan
  Instructions for communications with the on board aircraft:
  Traffic was carried out on VHF.  In the event of failure, the aircraft can report on the bearing wavelength or, after changing the transmitter, on short wave.
  Wavelengths:  VHF Detents I - IV (according to choice and agreement)
                         Bearing wavelength = 315 kHz
                         Short Wave            = 5360 kHz (Setting of)

  Signal Table:

a.  Steamers b.  Warships
Gustav = English   Karl Richard = Cruiser
Sophie = Swedish   Fritz Ärger = Aircraft carrier
Hans = Panamanian   Hans Karl = Auxiliary cruiser
Wilhelm = American   Lucie Tony = Small warship
Jota = Japanese
Paula = Brazilian   c. Reports
Ysop = Yugoslavian   X X X X = Must emergency land
Emil = Spanish   Zeppelin = Immediate return
Fritz = French   Waffe (1) = Armed with 1.
Cäsar = Portuguese   gerrissen = Antenna torn
Richard = Russian   Dora Max = Directional bearing
Delta = Greek
Gamma = Unknown

  Aircraft sends sighted vessel with the signal group and added course and speed, for example:  Delta Delta 245 09.
  If the aircraft needs bearings, it requests the group Dora Max on VHF. Then sends "YO" for about 20 seconds on 315 kHz. The ship sends the true bearing on VHF. The hundred digit is replaced by the following letters:

Bruno = Zero Meaning: 063 = B63   Bearings acknowledged by the aircraft by . . on 315 Khz
IX = One   345 = Z45
YSOP = Two
Zot = Three With failure of VHF ship sends on frequency df.

  VHF was chosen for the main communications with the aircraft in the vicinity of the ship. It is assumed that from VHF communications this traffic is not to be picked up by the enemy B.-Dienst.  In order to limit traffic as much as possible, the abbreviations listed in the instructions were chosen. Detent II is used as the VHF channel. In the event of an emergency at sea, the 315 kHz long-range wave had to be switched on the transmission side from the aircraft.  The ship replied to short wave "of" if there was no longer a VHF connection. All 3 wavelengths are continually manned by the radio station while the aircraft is in the air, 315 kHz at the direction finder in chart house, also 600 meters to the Goino - direction finder as a steamer wavelength and the short wave 18, 24, and 36 meters in the event that the steamer discovered by the aircraft reports the aircraft.  The areas in between were searched by the B.-Dienst. For the VHF communications, the aircraft has the "Fu.G. 17", the on board station an "Fu.G.u4" and at the same time the VHF man-pack device as a reserve on the observation deck. The wavelengths switched to by the aircraft were observed the days before and it was determined that there was no traffic on them.

          At 10.45 hours VHF channel Detent II was manned and there was was communication with the aircraft until 11.45 hours, which at this point was 60 nm away at an altitude of 250 meters. At 13.30 hours the message "gg" was picked up very faintly.  When the report was sent, the aircraft was on the return flight at a height of 250 meters and a distance of 65 nm from the ship. 42 nm away at a height of 250 meters, "gg" was given on the telephone and picked up by the ship. Then the plane went to an altitude of 500 meters, whereupon the reception immediately improved significantly.  The plane did not hear the acknowledgment from the ship. The message "gg" for confirmation was repeated with the Fu.G.u4 and the man-pack device. The reason why the aircraft no longer had reception could not  be determined.
        At 17.15 hours the aircraft climbed up again, came back after a short time and reported by VHF 20 degrees to port at 23 nm.  The aircraft was then informed that it should be ready to commit. And then the order:: "Steamer has radioed, tear the antenna, stay with the steamer."  The aircraft reported it understood and at 17.39 sent "-r- ob-",

  thereupon nothing was heard.  The order was passed several times: Report situation, but there was no answer. The observer in the aircraft only heard a loud whistling noise in the device after receiving the command to tear the antenna and no longer had any reception.
          At the same time as the plane flew off, the following telegraphy was received on 600 meters at 17.20 hours:  (English steamer/GBXG to Slangkop Radio:
  . . . . stopped , , , , white I set saw pson posts between funnel and mainmast has ordered us to heave to. +
Bearings were taken on the steamer, the name of which was not confirmed, in 275°T.  Strong atmospheric interference distorted the reception.  It was assumed that the steamer reported by the aircraft had sent this telegraphy. This message resulted in considerable radio traffic. Here follows the traffic on the observed wavelengths:

Three ships, transmitted at the same time on the frequency, sent telegraphy.  All three stations heard nearly at the same time.  Took bearings on the loudest steamer "PRIMO" in 352°T.

The report from 18.06 hours was repeated by Natal Radio on short wave with the time group "tor 1504z".

          So a steamer at 40.00 east and 28.10 south at the same time. . . / GBXG (name is not documented) sent a false raider report, which was then called again and brought considerable uncertainty to all of the radio traffic on 600 meters and short wave.
