SUBJECT: Transfer of German Navy Prisoners of War, U-873

          1.    In connection with the transfer of German Navy prisoners of war received at Boston, Massachusetts, on 17 May 1945, the following report is submitted:

          2.    German Navy Prisoner of War Officer, Kapitanleutnant Steinhoff, Fritz, 1G-445NA, committed suicide on 19 May 1945 by severing an artery in his wrist with a broken piece of eyeglass and a wire which apparently came from his cap. A board of officers is being appointed to investigate this death, and a report of its findings will be forwarded to your office.  
     
          3.    Transfers indicated in paragraph 1 above were made from Boston, Massachusetts, on 19 May 1945.  
     
          4.    Attached are two (2) complete rosters with the names of the officer transferred to Fort George G. Meade and the suicide indicated, and WD, PMG Form No. 2 of Steinhoff.
