30.08.42   However, the short pause of the engines was enough to let the tow line go taught.  The men on the forecastle can no longer hold the tow pennant.  The towing connection is only secured to the unsupported bolt of the tow hook.  When the tow pennant goes tight the hook does not hold.  The towing pennant jumps out.  In addition the hose is carried away.  When recovering his towline Vowe discovers that my tow pennant is not on his line.  Connection between the line and my tow pennant is lost as well as the pin of the tow hook because the bolt of the tow hook could not be released in time.  Another try to make the tow connection is put off, since I do not have a 2nd tow pennant, the tow hook is out of service and I cannot use a steel line in place of the tow pennant in the constantly increasing seas.  Masch.Mt. Kramer and the rubber boat remain on board.  Vowe also believes further attempt is hopeless in view of the weather

AJ 9727                            NW 3, Sea 3, medium heavy Swell, 5/10, 1029 mb +12°C

Mastheads reported coming out of a rain squall bearing 50°T.  When I come to the bridge, the mastheads are already very far out.  Moving ahead on the surface is no longer possible.  Therefore I decide to attack immediately and gave the order to crash dive.  Initially nothing is seen in the Atlantic swell. From the sound room there are continual reports, that propeller sounds are heard bearing 180°R.  Further, impulses like Asdic were heard. It sounded like the falling of a water drop on a hot plate.  So I ran towards the vessel  on course 50° and at 14.54 hours it came in sight again with target angle 0°.  The approach of the vessel in my wake, the unchanging target angle 0° leads to the conclusion that the vessel heard me on the surface and now searches to detect me submerged.  To gain distance abeam I run off on course 140° and then turn to run along on course 230°.  The boat is very difficult to hold in the powerful swell, therefore I only recognized the nature of the vessel later.  It is a freight steamer with passenger decks.  Forward on the forecastle there are 2 10.5 cm cannons.  Forward of the bridge to port and starboard a type of searchlight mast on which anti-aircraft armament is found.  The number of the cannons astern could not be recognized.  At the sinking location I later determined 2 aditional 10.5 cm cannons.  The ship had camouflage (mimicry).  For me it was clear that it was an auxiliary warship, that was stationed here as an auxiliary cruiser, U-boat hunter and weather vessel.  At 15.10 hours I turned to attack course of 320° - the Asdic impulses have now ceased - and shot at 15.16 hours a three-fan from a range of 800 meters.  The boat cut under after shooting.  After 50 seconds there were two impacts and detonations heard.  When the boat came up again the forecastle of the steamer can still be seen.  The boat then cut under again.  Now there followed two heavy detonations at intervals of half a minute.  The first was probably a boiler explosion, afterwards the breaking of bulkheads was heard. The 2nd was clearly depth charges gong high order.  There is no damage to the boat.  In coming up again nothing more of the steamer or remnants can be seen.
15.55   At 15.55 hours I surfaced and ran towards the sinking location. Not much floats there.  3 men have saved themselves in a rubber boat.  Some of the people struggle in the water for their lives. Wreckage is hardly

21.04   At 21.04 the boat was again at the sinking location.  Here there is a giant oil slick extending several miles.  After a long search I found 2 life rafts lashed together with 8 survivors.  Except for 2 whites all are Negro or mixed breeds.  All wear a similar uniform in which a life jacket is incorporated.  Head cover is a kind of car cap, The uniform clearly shows they are soldiers.  During the rather useless interrogation, because all were shouting and answering, I only learned that the name was Muskogee, Mukilted, or something similar.  Figures differ for the tonnage from 7000 to 3000 GRT.  I estimate the ship at 3000 GRT.
22.04   At 22.04 hours I again ran to position.

20.03   Crash dive by the Second Watch Officer for Consolidated flying boat. Report of the Second Watch Officer: flying boat bearing 130°T, altitude 200 meters, distance 4000 meters.  Flying boat crossed our wake.  The boat was unseen.  Due to the low range I went to depth 70 meters to wait.  First at  20.14 hours three aircraft bombs heard in the boat and listening gear at great range.
The time interval of 11 minutes from the crash dive to the detonation told me that the bombs were not aimed for me and especially since at the aircraft sighting the boat was in the sun sector, we remained unseen.  Went to periscope depth.
20.34   Nothing more to see.  Surfaced.
Considerations:  Either it was a sea reconnaissance aircraft with the task of seeing if a convoy route was free of U-boats or it is the remote escort of a convoy.  Unfortunately the latter does not apply.  Despite increased watchfulness of the lookouts and good visibility in the next hours no convoy in sight.

14.53   Convoy sighted in the mist bearing 300°T, 12 steamers and a destroyer.  Visibility changes continually from 1000 to 1500 meters.  Am not position far enough ahead to attack.
Am constantly in danger of bearing discovered from the foremost destroyer which strikes out far to starboard from close ahead of the convoy,

15.10   Was forced off at 15.10 hours by the forward sweeper, however remained unnoticed.  However, the convoy passes out of sight.  Came to convoy course 70° at GF, to get ahead.
15.32   At 15.32 hours by visibility improvement the convoy is in sight again at 2 nm.  Held contact at the margin of visibility.
15.57   At 15.57 hours the veil of mist rises.  We are on display.  Moving off if no longer possible.  Gave the order to crash dive and decide to attack submerged.

Surfaced.  Nothing seen.  Came to course 40°, 10 knots, because I assume that the convoy has taken a northern zigzag.  At 16.50 hours at 0°T the convoy again comes in sight.  During the sighting the convoy turns from 0° to 90°.  Maintaining contact was made difficult by continual changes in visibility.  From 17.00 hours visibility improvement to 4 nm by quickly strengthening northwest wind.

11.29

This is proved by the following: At 11.08 hours a Short Signal was received from Jahn: Have contact on convoy square AK 4168, enemy steers 30°.  By plotting I must now steer 195°.  Luckily at 11.29 hours a Short Signal was received from Jahn:  Stand by for my bearing signals.  By the bearing signals the boat must go in 280°.  Had I operated on the reported position, I would have gotten behind.

12.05   At 12.05 hours smoke clouds come in sight bearing 30°T.  I turn towards on a northeasterly course because by radio message the convoy steers 30°, and I want to maneuver ahead.  Köpke and Dierksen are still in my vicinity.
12.50   At 12.50 hours a destroyer comes in sight astern to port bearing 340°T.  The destroyer is already out to the bridge.  The boats scattered radically.  Ran on course 50° so as not to give up the forward position. Since I'm closest to the destroyer, I draw him to me.
13.05   At 13.05 hours the destroyer attempt to force me to submerged by artillery fire.  His impacts lie very inexact in bearing and in range far astern.  The distance increases.  Further the deterioration of the visibility is in our favor.  Therefore I don't think of diving.
13.29   At 13.29 hours the destroyer passes out of sight in a rain squall.  I set off further to the north to get directly ahead of the convoy.
14.00   At 14.00 hours the starboard flank destroyer comes in sight again, however I remain unseen.  Ran off on course 40°.  After 20 minutes the destroyer turns to the north and disappears in the drizzle.

I continue towards the steamers.  Now the port forward flank escort turns towards the convoy on a converging course to me.  I want to shoot now, because it is getting lighter.  The port forward flank escort presses me and in the mean time the port aft flank escort has come very close.  Shot at the 3 overlapping large steamers.  At 07.25 hours hours a single shot, at 07.28 hours a two-fan and at 07.30 hours another single shot.  Range = 2000 meters estimated, , target angle 90° and speed 7 knots.  The set depth was 5 meters.  The shooting data can be considered good.  That all torpedoes missed was laid to 3 factors:  1.  the medium swell, 2.  difficulties with the heavily rolling boat and 3. the long range.  The port forward flank escort is suddenly brightly illuminated on his starboard side.  I turn

14.30   Crash dive for Consolidated land-based aircraft.  Went to depth A -20 meters.  Nothing happens.  Went to periscope depth.  All around sweep is clear.
15.51   Surfaced.  Convoy is still in sight.  Aircraft circles several times  over the convoy and the passes out of sight in 300°T.  Both aircraft remained an amazingly short time with the convoy.  Apparently the action radius allows no longer stay.

Crash dive.  Went to depth A -20 meters.  No aircraft bombs.  Unfortunately machine gun fire is heard.  Because nothing follows in the next minutes, I went to periscope depth.  Periscope is strongly fogged so that very little can be distinguished.
16.16   I decide to surface, so as not to lose the convoy.
16.18   On surfacing the aircraft is located bearing 90°T, 200 meters away, altitude 200 meters.  Immediately crash dived.  Went to depth A -20 meters.  Again no aircraft bombs, again machine gun fire.
Now remained submerged, because I must assume that the aircraft are circling over the diving location.  After 20 minutes in the nearly out of service listening gear (GHG) fast growing louder propeller sounds were heard.  They were also heard with the naked ear and were identified as destroyer propeller sounds.  I gave the order to go to depth A +50 meters.  The boat steers course 100°.  The boat was overrun several times, without anything happening.  At 16.58 the first depth charge series of 11 charges was thrown.  The boat was already at depth A +50 meters.  The boat shakes strongly with the detonations.  The depth charges were well-placed and close over the boat.  Only very minor failures, like fuses and diving plane position transmitter were reported.  The destroyer comes about and

17.07   throws at 17.07 hours the second series of 9 depth charges.  These lay still closer around the boat.  The boat shakes very strongly, the instrument pointers turn over themselves.  After the first  depth charge series the Chief Engineer gave the order to disconnect the instruments from outboard pressure.  I did not hear this order.  By mistake, the depth gauge was also switched off.  When the second depth charge series was thrown according to the depth meter the boat rose very strongly.  Despite E-motors GF and bow down apparently the boat could not be held at depth.  The Chief Engineer immediately noticed the error and had the depth gauge switched on again.  The boat is found to be already at depth A +100 meters.  I immediately gave the order to blow and catch the boat at depth A +110 meters.  The boat did well.  This caused no unrest in the boat.  At depth A +90 meters I flood again.  Apart from some fuses, there were no failures with these depth charges.  Both approaches of the destroyers were easily heard in the boat and I increased speed each time.  After the depth charges I went to depth A +80 meters.  Sound bearings showed that 3 destroyers were involved in the depth charge pursuit.  One each on my port and starboard sides to listen and locate, the third undertakes the work of the thrower.  At 17.30 hours came to course 250°, to increase the distance between the convoy and me.  I hope that as a result the destroyer group will be forced to leave earlier.  At the same time Bolde was ejected, which did not miss its effect, as the next depth charges at 17.56 hours showed.  They lay significantly further away.  Additionally at 18.12 hours two depth charges still further away.  At 18.30 hours I turn to course 260° and eject a further Bolde.  At 18.44 hours there follows the next depth charge attack with a series of 5 charges.  They are closer again, however give no more concussion in the boat.  Now there were two hours of calm.  The boat was over time heavier and more stern down, as a consequence the propeller shaft bushings leak heavily.  I take the boat higher to depth 100 meters and hope to pump from torpedo compensating tank to achieve weight and trim balance.  The attempt fails because the pump does not draw.  Pumped from the regulating tank.  An attempt to achieve trim balance by moving the water out of the E-motor room bilge by bucket chain does not gain much.  Went to depth A -50.  At 19.00 hours after ejecting a Bolde came to course 270°.  Afterwards the outboard closure of the flooding mechanism can no longer be closed.
20.00 AL 1545 At 20.45 hours 3 further depth charges were thrown, which lay further away.  Since 20.54 in the listening gear there were no propeller sounds heard, which

which is not surprising with the almost completely worn out and useless device.  Only a locating sound, which sounded like the tak, tak, of a carnival frog, sheet metal bending under tensioning, is determined.  This sound was heard at an interval of 7-8 seconds and later an interval of 14-15 seconds.  Depth charged were no longer thrown,  The locating sounds suggested that the destroyer above had me well in his gear and waited.   Because in the meantime the bow room bilge was full of water and the stern down trim angle was always increasing, trimming forward was no longer possible because torpedo compensating tanks 2 and 3 and the forward trim tank are full, I decide to surface at darkness.  Reinforcing this decision was the strong self noise of the boat which was very loud in the listening gear.  The latter convinced me that the destroyer could hear me without difficulty.  The boat can currently be held only with one motor LF and one motor KF. If I have to pump constantly, this noise always gives a sure location for the boat to the destroyer.  My plan is to slowly go higher. At depth 12 meters blow with air.  When the boat get out immediately start the diesel to get out of visual range of the destroyer as quickly as possible. The best four lookouts get into the darkened conning tower while surfacing to get used to the darkness, so that they can immediately detect the destroyer when they reach the bridge. From 24.00 hours I bring the boat up slowly.

20.00 BF 4475 I have little faith in the report from the listening gear, because it is completely out of service and only works at very short range.  For this reason I believe a report to B.d.U. is incorrect, because this would cause a disturbance for the inbound and outbound boats.  If it was a torpedo shot from an enemy U-boat, I must expect that the boat will pursue me in the night.  Therefore at 20.25 hours I come to course 60° and zigzag. At twilight I return to my general course of 90°.  At 21.50 I dove to proceed submerged.

on the Kriegstagebuch of "U 755" from 4.8. to 6.10.42.

First patrol of the Kommandanten with a new boat.  Unfortunately the tenaciously executed convoy operations brought no success.  The experience gained here will be of great use on subsequent patrols.
