U-73 sunk by USS Woolsey and Trippe, December 16, 1943

The American Liberty Ship John S. Copley was torpedoed in the late afternoon of December 16, 1943 by U-73, while joining convoy GUS-24 off Oran. The U-boat was sunk by the escorts shortly after this attack.  John S. Copley was towed to Oran, repaired and returned to service.
