Dear Commander Riheldaffer,

                I enclose a tentative crew list in respect of the U-boat sunk in the North Atlantic on 22nd February and from which 7 P/W's have been brought to St. John's Newfoundland by the Polish destroyer "BURZA", whilst a further 5 are awaited whrn the U.S.C.G.C. "CAMPBELL" reaches that port.

                The nmber of the U-boat is not yet known but the indications are that it is a 500 tonner, built at Hamburg and which left Germany for Norway -- and Brest -- early in August, 1942 and atarted from Brest on the final war cruise in the first days of January, 1943.  With regard to the attached  crew list, a fair amount of data has been obtained from the Censorship about Leutnant zur See Martin REESE, thought to belong to the December '39 entry.  Copies of any of these submission slips can be sent you, should you be missing any.

        Oberleutnant zur See DOEHLER, who swam away and declined to be rescued, is probably Hans DOEHLER of the April '37 entry, of whom a Berlin lady wrote on 1st June, 1942, that he had recently been married.  The same correspondent referred on 15th April, 1941 to H.D. having recovered from an illness.

        The captured Chief Petty Officer METTE has an unusual name and might conceiveably be connected with otto METTE, mentioned on 3rd September '42 (by a druggist who had employed him) as being a Marine Ob.Asst. Arzt.
