Attacks by Hudson Aircraft F, L, K, W and X of 500 Squadron RAF on November 14, 1942

U-595 was sighted and attacked by Hudsons C and D of 608 Squadron RAF at 0945. These attacks severly damaged U-595 leaving her unable to dive. The report below describes the follow-on attacks by aircraft of the same squadron which resulted in the final beaching.

                      Your 2125/15 December*,  
     
                       Following details now received:  
     
                       Attacks by Hudson a/c F L K W and X of 500 Squadron. Date 14th Nov. 42 time of sighting 0945 position 36 degrees 38' North 00 degrees 00' West weather 5/TLB cloud sea slight visibility 20 miles. Duty A/S patrol. Initial contact U-bt. sighted on surface. Following attacks resulted in final beaching:  
     
          (1)        F/500. Attack made from starboard quarter releasing from 30 feet 4 Mark XI torpex D/C's set to shallow and spaced 30 feet apart while U-boat fully surfaced. U-bt.'s flak badly damaged a/c. Stick exploded about 30 yards ahead of zig-zagging Ubt.  
     
          (2)        X/500. Attack made from U-bt's port quarter at angle of 45 degrees to track releasing from 10 feet 4 Mark XI torpex D/C's set to shallow and spaced 36 feet apart while U-bt. fully surfaced. Stated that stick straddled and exploded across stern of U-bt. and that appeared 4 torpedoes released from its bow. A/C attacked with M/G and U-bt. hit a/c with fairly large calibre shell and cannon shell.  
     
          (3)        W/500. Attack made from U-bt.'s port quarter at 30 degrees to track. U-bt. zig-zagging. Released from 50 to 100 feet 4 Mark XI torpex D/C's set to shallow and spaced 30 feet apart while U-bt fully surfaced. Stated stick undershot by 35 yards. A/c then circled and attacked U-bt with M/G. Another circuit made and a/c attacked from U-bt's port beam releasing one 100 lb. A/S bomb fuzed half second delay which missed five yards off U-bt's starboard side causing heavy roll.  
     
          (4)        K/500. Attack made from U-bt's port quarter at 45 degrees to track releasing from 50 feet 4 Mark XI torpex D/C's pistol set to 25 feet and spaced 30 feet apart while U-bt surfaced. On approach U-bt fired flak from main gun, cannon guns and M/G's to which a/c replied with front guns knocking two men off gun platform. A/C considerably damaged. Stated stick exploded on correct line but due effects flak release was pressed too early and stick undershot.  
     
          (5)        L/500. A/c attacked under flak from U-bt from starboard quarter at 600 to track releasing from 50 feet 4 Mark XI torpex D/C's set shallow spaced 36 feet apart while U-bt fully surfaced. Stick overshot and exploded off U-bt's port bow. A/c circled and attacked with 100-lb bomb fuzed half second delay which was near miss astern. Pilot also attacked with M/G, a/c remained in vicinity till U-boat beached itself.                1657A/2
