This patrol took place during the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union.  From the invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 U-boats operated in the Gulf of Finland in coordination with Finnish forces, sometimes using Finish bases.  A ceasefire between the Finns and the Soviets ended hostilities on 5 September 1944 and was followed by the Moscow Armistice on 19 September 1944.

The patrol used the Finnish grid system to note positions in the KTB.  The Finnish National Archives has digitized charts from this period.  Click on the Icon at left to visit the National Archives of Finland.

Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

Boats in the Gulf of Finland:
        1.  Operational radio messages.
        1)  Boats receive orders to depart and operational orders from F.d.U.  Following messages if necessary from 9. Sich. Div. via a U-boat lying in Helsinki.  In particular inbound and outbound instructions, changes, mine situation, instructions concerning own and Finish warships and their protection.
        2)  It is accepted that boats must always remain submerged in the operations area.  Corresponding short duration of the patrol is expected.  Start return transit independently to the next base, from which the boat is to depart.
        3)  Reports are to be submitted:  if the boat has left the archipelago or operations area, or after . . .

08.07.44   surfacing after patrol, or starting archipelago transit, or when a boat makes time sensitive findings and experiences with knowledge or guidance of particular importance.
        4)  Of particular importance are reports concerning enemy sightings, which suggest ventures against the coast.  They are to be submitted immediately even with full commitment of the boat.
        5)  Encounter with Finnish U-boats is possible even in the operations area, notification is not always guaranteed.
                                                              F.d.U.-Mitte
to 3) I believe the Radio Message report at the beginning or end of archipelago transit is not advisable.  The distances are so short that the boat will certainly have bearings taken immediately and probably aircraft will be drawn to it in the shortest time.  In the archipelago there is no maneuverability whatsoever.  The same applies to surfacing to report.
Reported to M.V.O. Finnflotte in Hamina.  Presentation to Finnish Flottenchef.
Inspection of planned berth for 3 boats.
In the evening consultation with 9. S.D.
Findings:  Local conditions and difficulties were not apparent to F.d.U. in Kiel.  Therefore suggested to 9. S.D.:  Apply for a suitable U-boat Officer as an advisor A 1.  Operational subordination 9.S.D., who has most experience in the operations area.

17.53   Shot from tube III.  Torpedo type " T V ".  Steering WS, depth 4 meters, target speed 14 knots, target angle left 108°, range = 2000 meters.  Aim point stern of the first boat proceeding in line ahead at an interval of 3 about boat lengths.  No hit, no detonation.
Assumption:  Miss due to underestimating speed.  No experience concerning Lachs. [presumably the type of vessel]   Boats showed no defensive maneuvering, instead-proceeded on calmly.  Mood:  one of disappointment.
Afterwards considered if a 3-fan would have led to success.  Unlikely, due to time shortage due to the bad visibility the shot would have to be made with only approximate data, so in my view the TV was preferable.  The crew displayed a good attitude despite the two failures.  Was not discouraged. Trusted in the next opportunity.

    12.30 in 143 C 77 2 patrol vessels on westerly course.
They cruised in large legs via 60°N.  Many crew members on deck, about 15 men on each boat.  In the G.H.G. sounds similar to E-sounding mixed with faint chirps. At times firecracker sounds.  Assumption:  U-boat hunting group.  Showed a sharp silhouette.  Was not detected.
13.20 The visibility was somewhat better.  As a result, I believe I will not be able to charge tonight.  As things stand, even at the moment when everything is stirred up because "Panke" has knocked one off there, there will be an opportunity in the area.  Began return transit.  My port shaft has a knock.  At KF grinding-, at GF banging sounds, like a piston engine.

Summary of experiences on this patrol:
The patrol was divided into individual operations.  Each operation was completely separate from another, even if it took place in the same operations area.  The operations areas characterized by low water depths, interspersed with known and unknown rocks.  One can probably better describe it as a be-dewed meadow. Difficult navigational conditions due to strong and erratic current offsets.  However, it had to be done and it worked, even if the boat also suffered some bumps.  It was unpleasant to proceed in the fog in a 2 nm wide strip between rocks and mine barriers.
Russian defenses were completely unskilled.  Attacks seemingly up to now only on perfectly sighted U-boats, which made themselves noticeable by surfacing or showing the periscope.  Enemy air observed by day only in Narwabucht, in other operations areas only very isolated flights.  In Narwabucht also enemy air by night,

    1944 Eastern Baltic
which fought the boat against the bright northern horizon.  Attack attempts generally took place on the diagonal from ahead.  In so doing shot on board weapons.  Bomb series from altitude 50-100 meters.
Listening conditions generally very bad.  Sometimes Schnellboote were not heard at periscope depth 100 meters from the U-boat.
It is advantageous that the water is so little transparent.  A dark, or black painted boat is not seen at the periscope depth from an aircraft.
From the breaks between the individual operations the crew got through the patrol very well.  The resilience remains.  Morale is excellent.  Everyone is eager to return to the enemy as soon as possible.
Cooperation with the Finnish Flotte was very good.  A Finnish Liaison Officer was always ordered to "Grand Hotel".

1.) The observation on 27 August at 12.30 hours shows at most the possibility of underwater locating.  However this is in no way determined with certainty, as was initially accepted and seems unlikely.
2.) An aggressive patrol in new circumstances.
3.) It is recommended that the sinking of a V.M.V. II (28 July 1944) be accredited.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the K.T.B. of "U 475" (Stoeffler) from 25.6. - 6.9.1944.

A good operation in a navigationally difficult area.  After attack opportunity on 16 July could not be exploited due to shooting ban, after attack permission on small vessels on 28 July a beautiful success was realized by the sinking of a patrol vessel.  Aircraft attack was countered by good anti-aircraft readiness on 2 August.  Further attacks did not lead to deserved success due to misjudgment and defensive measures.

Accredited success:    1 patrol vessel sunk.
