Note: The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website. The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank. |

16.12.42 | Bergen | Began shipyard period.
23.01.43 | Pier-side testing.
23.01.43 | |||||
12.00 | Cast off Marineholm. AK cruise on the measured mile. There is an aircraft salvage ship of the Air Base with an He 59 in the vicinity. Shoots several white, red and green stars, the aircraft seems to be drifting off.
13.00 | |||||
14.00 | |||||
14.05 | Ran towards, a man swims in the vicinity of the aircraft.
14.10 | Man rescued. Salvage ship drives around in the area like a humming top, interferes with my maneuvers and calls me, I should still fish out a man who drifted off in a dinghy.
14.20 | Man was rescued with the rubber boat. Had to back strongly when taking him over because otherwise the escort vessel would run the boat over.
Was asked to recover the aircraft which drifted towards the barrier and the cliffs.
Closed with E-motors over the forestem, because the boat maneuvered badly in the strong squalls and there was only a little space left before reaching the islets. Put a line over, the man on the aircraft worked well. Attached the line to the port float. Hauled the aircraft over the stern from the coast. The line broke at the float, maneuvered once again. The port wing contacted the forestem and was lightly damaged when the aircraft turned quickly in a gust. Then moved forward taking the towline to the stern. Since with both diesels AK against one another I could not turn against the wind, I had to go back and forth tacking away clear of the coast and into the wind. The aircraft towed well and steered in starboard echelon from me.
In the meantime the salvage ship made off and left the work to me.
15.15 | The line broke once again. A tug sent for assistance takes over the rest of the towing. I remained in the area an hour, then performed a trim test. Cylinder block of the starboard diesel exhibits too much play. Must be removed once again.
18.15 | Made fast Laksevåg shipyard.
After being clothed, the rescued people went to the Air Base by ferry. The rubber boat was handed in the next day. The Air Base took no notice of our assistance. The leadership of the salvage ship made a helpless, unseamanship impression.

16.00 | AK 4436 | ||||
W 4, high Swell, cloudy, heavy show showers, Vis. 1000 meters - 5 nm | I gave bearing signals in accordance with War Orders. Heavy snow squalls come again. With the second giving of bearing signals a vessel with target angle 2-5° came out of the snow at barely 2000 meters. I lay athwart its course and in the swell cannot get away.
17.55 | Dived, in the hope that I was not seen and that it was a steamer.
Unfortunately it was a large corvette with a diesel engine, which overruns us at the beginning. I descended with 30° bow down angle, initially to depth A +40 meters and balanced the boat at depth A +60 meters. When I again heard diesel sounds, I believed that Hornkohl had overrun me, it sounded exactly like a U-boat at GF.
18.23 | This mistake was soon corrected by well-placed depth charges and the already mentioned small series detonations. S-gear now began, we seem to have favorable layers here. Without functional listening gear sitting in the cellar is bad because one cannot know when he goes away. After the depth charges the gyro-compass and the port clutch failed. Had to stop the port E-motor. The boat holds well at depth 2A meters.
Incidentally, of course, the usual broken glass, cable breaks and short circuits.
I showed the corvette the stern, there must be 2 now. You can hear them working in the Sea State, possibly in addition to diesel engines, they have a noiseless drive option so that you only hear the beating of the replacement propeller.
Convoy disappears in direction 60°T.
One destroyer runs in, stops for a long time, directly over us. In the meantime we have gone in a circle, this has always proved to be the best for us.
19.15 | Came to a southerly course, sounds shifted astern and disappeared.

The heavy Sea State impacted the operation significantly. The changing visibility conditions, hail squalls and driving snow did not mean anything special because the crew was accustomed to it.
2. | |||||
It is a matter of concern that in heavy seas the boat was sometimes not easy to hold with the bilge pumps, in one case even had to switch to E-motors to get the diesel bilge pumped out.
3. | |||||
The alertness of the convoy was significantly less than observed previously in the Arctic. Once locating by destroyers was suspected.
4. | |||||
The new diesel corvettes now seem to have a special propulsion gear (E-motors) for listening pursuits. The sounds of the diesel are very similar to the U-boats.
5. | |||||
It is noteworthy, that when meeting other U-boats, the boats were always first recognized by the black rain hats and raincoats, before the boat could be seen.
