Prize report from commander "U-37"

 
 
concerning capture and sinking of French,
 
 
steamer " V E R M O N T ", Le Harve.
 
     
 

        At 08.15 hours on 15.10.1939 we stopped the French steam merchant "VERMONT" of Le Havre in position 47° 48'N/17° 07'W and ordered her to hand over the papers of the ship. Afterwards the ship was sunk according to article 10 of the prize regulations.

          The ship was enemy, it was carrying no cargo. According to article 10 of the prize regulations it was allowed to capture and take her as prize. The ship was destroyed according article 72 of the prize regulations.  
 

        The crew was released in their lifeboats.

 
          The ship had tried to escape an investigation and had to be stopped by gunfire. The radio message sent during the incident can be seen in the attachment.
