Note:  The positions iin the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

    04.20   Surfaced!  Pursued in 90°.
04.52 AB 3559 U-boat in sight.  Recognition signals exchanged.  "La Baume"!
        Signal traffic:
Kommandant to Kommandant - Have I held contact on you since yesterday evening?
Answer:  Kommandant to Kommandant - Impossible.  Yesterday evening I was much further to the west.
It is quite possible, that "La Baume" was the U-boat followed by me.  However due to his staunch rejection, refrained from Radio Message to F.d.U.
        Returned to own attack area.
Still intend to be submerged in the square until 17.00 hours moving back and forth in position.  Believe it is possible that with the good sound conditions a U-boat could be heard both on the surface and submerged.
    06.16   Radio Message (0417/724):
"Group Monsun" - Apparently an enemy U-boat in own disposition.  Shift attack areas in 280°, 70 nm.

09.30 Passed Barentsburg submerged at a distance of 200-300 meters.  Not much has changed in Barentsburg.  At the pier and in the neighborhood no vessels are distinguished.  New are apparently 2 cannons, that are well camouflaged half way up the mountain.  Caliber 5 to 7 cm. I would not have recognized them if the barrels had not been swung for drill. Upon further observation I also recognize a range finder which belongs to the battery. Left of the guns at the same level, two new 15 to 20 meter high masts have been erected.  Apparently this belongs to a new small radio station.
10.30 Came to opposite course.    Left Grünen Fjord.  While leaving on the starboard side at the entrance to the fjord after Barentsburg a watch post is recognized.  Otherwise no traffic is observed.
These observations were not noted during the last reconnaissance of Barentsburg on 14 - 16 September 1943.  At that time no people or soldiers were detected despite long observation.  It's likely that that in this case it's the remaining occupation troops and guns that were hidden.  On the other hand there is also the possibility that the battery is part of troops stationed elsewhere, for example, Advent Fjord at Longyear.

Boat reported back from war patrol to F.d.U.

      Summary:

During the patrol in the period from 29 August - 10 October no enemy steamers were sighted and no convoys were operated on.
For the first part of the patrol the boat belonged to Group "Monsun".  Off Spitzbergen the boat together with other boats formed Group "Spitzbergen".
The boat held enemy contact on English U-boats twice.  On 2 September 1943 an English U-boat with an extended periscope was sighted in AB 3528.  The initial belief that it was an own boat can no longer be correct because afterwards another English U-boat was sighted off Spitzbergen on 12 September.  Sound pursuit with both sightings, which lasted sometimes for days, characteristic, clear E-motor sounds could be detected and the engine noise of the two sighted boats were the same both in tone and character.  Accordingly, in pursuit of first sighted English Submarine after loss of underwater contact I must have met "La Baume" who was operating in "Becker's" square.
For days off Spitzbergen I tried to detect the surfacing of the English U-boat or discover where the Englishman recharged his batteries.  To this end, Barentsburg was approached twice and explored. At the same time the boat explored Eisfjord and some of the adjacent bays. However, the attempt was unsuccessful.  I presume that the Englishman had left this position after 8 days. The very good listening possibilities were noteworthy in these attempts to find the English boat. Even in the clearest weather and best visibility the listening range was significantly larger than the visibility.
The English engine sounds were very easy to spot in the listening gear. The boats proceeded submerged at much higher speed than ours. Revolutions fluctuated between 180 and 200. This corresponds to an approximate speed of 4-5 knots. However at times, the previously very clear engine noises disappeared for about 10-15 minutes. During this time the Englishman worked with an Asdic device (high whistling tone).
The good experiences that had already been made on the previous patrol regarding the characteristics of the boat on the surface and submerged in good and bad weather, were also confirmed this time.
The crew held up well and achieved fairly good to good performance in all areas. The level of training was perfected.
