Question
Answer
Remarks

1.)  Cannon and mount construction, cannon number 2 - 15 cm S.K. L/45 in torpedo boats and U-boats - mount C 1916 Krupp No. 1400 and 1401.
2.)  Observation on cannon construction Due to the stronger substructures, the shock when shooting is far greater than with the "DEUTSCHLAND" boats.  Oil leaks have occurred after each shooting, some of the heaviest type.
3.)  Has the substructure been replaced or strengthened?  (Reason why not carried out)
No

4.)  Upper limit of the leveling mechanism. Cannon could follow the lurching well up to 9°.
5.)  During the patrol, was there any work to be done to 4.) Carried out: What? When?
No

6.)  Observation on the slewing mechanism.
No

7.) During the patrol, was there any work to be done to 6.) Carried out: What? When?
No

8.)  Has the boat dived with unlashed gun?  When?
No

9.)  Were there any stoppages?  What?  How eliminated? 1 jam from casing tear, casing remover!
10.)  Have failures occurred in the firing?  What?  How eliminated?
No

============================================================================
11.)  Have there been any problems with the sights and rifle scopes?  What?  How eliminated? After six weeks of sea time, fogging of the lens glasses of two telescopes is found.
12.)  Have the pressure-proof rifle scopes leaked?  At what depth?
No

13.)  Have icing problems occurred?
No

14.)  Are pressure-proof ammunition receptacles leaking (Indicate whether filled from the depot or refilled on board or opened on board and closed again).

10% of the pressure-proof casing receptacles and 5% of the pressure-proof projectile receptacles leaked.  The pressure proof receptacles were delivered from Naval Depot Düsseldorf and after the deep dive in Danziger Bay opened on board to examine and closed again.

a)  Casing or round receptacles
b)  Projectile receptacles
15.)  Were there ammunition failures? Some projectile failures were attributed to damp detonators. 50 detonators and primers were exchanged and will be given to Düsseldorf for inspection.
16.)  What was the highest measured temperature in the ammunition magazines?  At which air temperature and water temperature? On 1 August in the forward ammunition magazine there was a highest temperature of 33°C, in the aft magazine 31°C, in control room 34°C.  Air temperature 32°C, water temperature 27°C.
17.)  Was ammunition delivery from inside the boat was sufficient? The forward hoist was out of service a lot, forward movement by hand was severely hampered by the radio room built into the control room.
18.)  What faults have occurred on the range-measuring device?
No

19.)  Did the artillery command systems work properly or what malfunctions have occurred?. The membranes broke several times when shooting. Orders were later only transmitted using a megaphone.
20.) a)  Was the ammunition stowed well at sea? The shelf for empty casings was torn away by the sea.
       b)  Did stowage give rise to any issues? With the exception of 30 rounds in folding racks, the ready ammunition is inaccessible. Stowage for live projectiles must be provided in the magazines.

Artillery Experience

The boat type has proven itself as an excellent artillery boat.  The particularly uncomfortable yawing for the "DEUTSCHLAND"-boats stepped into the background in "U-140".
          The cannon material was perfect.
The 3-meter range-finder gave no reason for an exhibition except for slow extension and retraction. The boat dives faster than the range finder can be retracted.
The rear ammunition hoist worked perfectly until the end of the patrol. The forward one stopped working for good for several serious failures and must be viewed as faulty construction.  (see Special Report).
The majority of the ready ammunition was so unfavorably stowed that it could only be brought to the gunners with considerable difficulty.  Up to 30 shots were re-stowed in folding racks in the boat's interior for reasons of stability.  There was no disadvantage for combat because, with a few exceptions, only ammunition from the the magazine was shot.
A few projectile failures were attributed to defective detonators.
The rack for stowing of the empty casings and casing containers in the superstructure collapsed in the seas. Additional space needs to be established..
