Op-16-Z
  OR/Riheldaffer, J.L.

                                                                                              12 May, 1945.

  MEMORANDUM   for the Director:
                                  Via:  (1)  Op-16-1-F _____  Op-16-1 _____.

Subject:        Request for Release from Active Duty.

  1.  It is respectfully requested that approval be given the attached request for release from active duty.

  2.  I was recalled to active duty in January, 1941, and have been continuously in ONI since that date.  With the capitulation of Germany the most important work of Op-16-Z is completed and the German P/W Section can be abolished within a few weeks.  The other activities of the Branch can be efficiently handled by the present section heads and it is not believed that a relief will be required for me.

  3.  Commander W. S. LaPorte, U.S.N.R. , assistant coordinator of the Washington Document Center is fully qualified to assume charge of that activity so that no relief is required for me.

  4.  When recalled to active duty I had been employed by General Motors Overseas Operations for a period of twelve years in an executive position.  My financial position and responsibilities are such that it is essential for me to have immediate employment when released from duty.  Positions are now open to me in both General Motors Overseas Operations and U.S. Steel Export provided they can be accepted within the next three or four months.  If my release is delayed beyond that time the present reorganizations being made will have been completed and my chances of employment will be seriously endangered.

  5.  It is my personal desire to be released 30 June, 1945 so that I may have one or two months of accrued leave before returning to civilian employment.  I believe that this is not only desirable but necessary for proper rehabilitation.

  6.  In view of the published intention of BuPers to release retired officers as rapidly as possible I feel very strongly that, in justice to myself and family, I should request my release at the time when I can obtain suitable and satisfactory employment.
