        Commander R. W. English, R. N. (Ret.) reported back to Captain Stapler, USN. Commander English first arrived in New York, February 20th, to act as liaison and advisor in regard to the operation and maintenance of twenty-four trawlers lent by Great Britain. February 23 and 24, Commander English spent in Norfolk, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina, settling preliminary details of coaling, berthing, and maintenance of the trawlers. At 1841 Q, C.G. Charleston reported Tallapoosa at scene of sub bombing, 33-39, 77-06, position 48 miles 120 T., from Carolina Beach. Reported finding only large slick of light gray oil. Agassiz also in area. At 2245 Charleston advised Tallapoosa prevented by gale and heavy rain from locating sub sunk off Cape Fear. Will try again in morning, weather permitting.
   
Tallapoosa, at 2300 Q, reported following survivors of tanker Esso Nashville picked up in 33-58 N., 77-06 W. at 0900 Q. Tallapoosa picked up 21 survivors, the Agassiz 9, the Goldsborough 8. One man apparently missing. Tallapoosa proceeding to search for survivors of Atlantic Sun. Goldsborough proceeding to Norfolk. Tanker still afloat but almost broken into two parts.

          Hamilton made 3 depth charge attacks, 0135 Q, April 1st, on excellent sound contacts, position 5 1/2 miles, 144° from Wimble Shoals Buoy. Contact moving on first two attacks, stationary after 3rd attack. Oil bubbles continued to rise. Hamilton believes sub lies on bottom. Remaining in area.  
     
          C.G.C. Jackson standing by S.S. Tiger, torpedoed at 2300 Q, about 10 miles S/E of Cape Henry. Ship still afloat and not on fire at 0415, April 1. 41 survivors on YP-52 being brought in to Norfolk. Number of missing unknown. At 0445 Q, C.G. Jackson reported towing Tiger to Hampton Roads.
