	Preliminary investigation of attacks on O N S 5 show following points. Battle divided into two periods divided by three days gale. First period 28th April to May 1st with pack of about 8 U-Boats. Second period May 4th to 6th about 25 U-Boats.
	In first period, 8 unsuccessful night attacks repulsed but one day attack successful. Scare tactics based on appreciation of H/F D/F bearings were successful. In second period, two successful day attacks and three successful night attacks delivered and over 30 night attacks repulsed. U-Boats were attacking by 18 pairs and three's. Possibly one day attack delivered by pair. No new tactics in night attacks. By day U-Boats approached from ahead of centre of convoy and fired from between the columns. U-Boats were using 2 different H/F frequencies simultaneously during night of 4th May.
	Possibly 2 different packs attacked. A C I diagrams and orders used throughout. Experience shows that at night 6 ships is minimum number on 271 close screen unless weather permits one side of screen to be left unprotected and that now 271 fitted ships of support group should be stationed at least 8 miles clear of convoy. Co-operation between escort and support group excellent. Little Air Cover available due to weather which also prevented fuelling of escorts. Tanker "BRITISH LADY" did not carry enough fuel. Rescue Trawlers proved their use. It is strongly suggested that convoy was routed too far north into ice and bad weather. Only on one night after gale had scattered convoy and in rough sea did U-Boats gain upper hand. It is thought likely that day attacks will become more, and night attacks less frequent as result of this battle. Following claims are considered reasonable without close investigation certainties SUNFLOWER ORIBI VIDETTE SNOWFLAKE. Very probable LOOSESTRIFE VIDETTE OFFA Aircraft of RCAF. Probable DUNCAN PELICAN. Possible DUNCAN OFFA Aircraft of RCAF VIDETTE TAY PINK SENNEN SPEY. Numerous other attacks were delivered. SNOWFLAKE'S kill was by one depth charge. VIDETTE Hedgehog a kill.
