Draught of Merchant Vessels

  Prefatory note:
This survey contains the mean draughts of merchant vessels of 1,000 - 7,000 g.r.tons, in ballast and fully laden.
The draughts of the individual ships of the same size nearly always differ somewhat from each other, as they depend on the shape of the vessel underwater.  THe draughts given in the list are averaged over several different ships and must only be regarded as approximate.

The data in the "Lloyds - Register" column signify:
Top column:  Depth of the holds,
          2nd column:  freeboard,
3rd column:  mean draught of the fully laden ship.

Mean draught signifies the average value between so-called summer - winter - North Atlantic - fresh and salt water - freeboard.  This freeboard is the authorized draught for the season of the year in the particular sailing areas.
